Why do periods hurt?
Each month, your uterus contracts to shed its lining. These contractions are triggered by prostaglandins - chemicals that cause the muscle to tighten and briefly reduce blood flow. Less oxygen to the muscle = cramping pain.
For some, it’s mild.
For others, it’s intense and disruptive.
Severe or worsening pain isn’t something to ignore. Conditions like endometriosis or fibroids can make cramps much worse.
Relief can include:
• Anti-inflammatories (like ibuprofen)
• Heat
• Gentle movement
• Hormonal support (if appropriate)
Pain is common. Debilitating pain is not “just part of being a woman.”
