What is a Nurse Practitioner (NP)?

You might have seen a nurse practitioner at your local clinic – but what exactly do they do?

Nurse Practitioners are highly trained healthcare professionals who can:

✅ Diagnose and treat health conditions
✅ Prescribe medications
✅ Order and interpret tests
✅ Manage ongoing care for a wide range of health needs

They work closely alongside doctors, nurses and the wider healthcare team to provide expert patient centered care.

Due or overdue for a cervical smear?

In the past, you may have had a cervical sample taken by health professional (which used to be called a smear test). Nowadays, we offer HPV swabs which you can do yourself in the clinic or at home. HPV self-swabs are quick, private and just as effective as regular smear tests at detecting cancer-causing strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Learn more here: Cervical screening

Cervical screening is recommended every five years for women and people with a cervix aged 25-69 who have had sexual contact (or every 3 years for some people). If you think you're due, please talk to your GP or one of our nurses.

Please note: regular cervical smear tests may still be recommended for some people, and you can still choose this option if you prefer.

Dealing With Anxiety

It’s completely normal to feel anxious before an exam, job interview, or big event. But when anxiety becomes strong, frequent, and difficult to manage, it can start to affect everyday life. This is known as Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) — the most common type of anxiety.
Common symptoms of GAD include:

*Feeling tense, nervous, on edge, or irritable
*Racing heart, shortness of breath, or “butterflies”
*Trouble concentrating or sleeping
*Constant worry or feeling something bad might happen
*Physical symptoms like headaches, nausea, or tiredness
*Inability to relax or enjoy quiet time
*The need to know what's going to happen in the future

If you are dealing with these types of anxiety, our team is here to help. Give us a call 📞to schedule a consultation.

Are your vaccinations up to date?

As the flu and COVID-19 continue to circulate, it’s important to check that your vaccinations are up to date.

Vaccination remains a key defense in reducing severe illness and protecting our communities. Whether it's your annual flu shot or the latest COVID-19 booster, staying current helps keep you and those around safe.

Improve Your Wellbeing

If anxiety is affecting your daily life, talk to your GP or NP.

There is no single test to diagnose GAD. Instead, your practitioner will assess your symptoms, rule out other causes, and help you make a plan to manage anxiety. This might include talking therapies, mindfulness, self-care strategies, or medication when needed.

The MMR vaccine is the best form of protection against measles.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses. It spreads very easily from person to person by breathing in air after a person with measles has sneezed, coughed, talked or even just breathed. Measles can also be spread after touching surfaces contaminated with the measles virus. Measles can cause serious health problems, and about 1 in 3 people with measles will need hospital care.
Please monitor for measles symptoms which include:

An illness that begins with high fever (over 38 C), cough, runny nose, and sore red eyes (conjunctivitis)
A rash, beginning on the face and gradually spreading down the body to the arms and legs. The rash lasts for up to one week.

Getting immunised with two doses of the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine (after the age of 12 months) is the best form of protection against measles. The MMR vaccine is free in New Zealand for anyone aged 18 or under, and for people who are eligible for free healthcare.

If traveling overseas, get vaccinated at least two weeks before departure, especially if traveling to areas with measles outbreaks.

If you aren’t immunised or aren’t sure, please call us to discuss your eligibility with one of our nurses.

More information about measles is available here.

Breast Changes? Don’t wait. Get Checked, fast.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a timely reminder to do regular self-checks, as early detection is vital. If you’ve noticed something unusual – like a lump, swelling, or skin changes – and can’t get a same-day appointment at your usual clinic, we’re here to help.

You can speak to one of our online doctors, and if you’ve taken photos beforehand, that can really help. They’ll assess your symptoms, provide support, and recommend in-person follow up if needed.

We encourage everyone to know what their breasts normally look and feel like, and to understand what common changes to watch out for. Breast Cancer NZ recommends checking your breasts once every year.

If you have any concerns or want to learn more about breast health, don't hesitate to book an appointment with us. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
