Embodied consciousness is when we bring our awareness inwards from the external world or the craziness of the mind and down into our body.

This is when we become grounded in the experience of being in a physical body and integrate all of our experiences within our cells.

Grounding, downward-moving energy is a powerful way to access embodied consciousness - we build sensitivity to sensation within the physical body, and we process and let go of emotions, thoughts, and excess energy which creates a sense of stability, nourishment, and calm.

This is the type of energy that so many of us are in need of cultivating in our modern age.

Yin yoga is an incredible tool that can help us directly access this grounding, nourishing energy that so many of us crave!

Yin yoga in itself is a calming and grounding practice, however, there are specific asanas, kriya meditations, and pranayama exercises that help us to directly cultivate downward moving, grounding energy, known as Apana Vayu - which is one of 5 prana vayus or energetic currents in our body.

These include extended exhalations, visualizations using the lower belly, tailbone & the earth as well as forward folds and twists.

Ground down into your body with me!

I teach a 75-minute online yin yoga class every week via zoom.

Classes are every second Sunday at 4pm EST (Monday AM in NZ) & Thursday evenings at 6.30pm NZDT.

Yin yoga is for every BODY

In yin, we understand that everyone's bones are structured differently and everyone has different levels of flexibility and range of motion due to many factors such as age, their work, and what physical activity they do or have done in the past.

This means that yin postures may look completely different for every person who is in a yin yoga class - and that is not only okay, it is to be expected!

In yin we aren't striving to reach the perfect alignment, to force, push and pull to get our body to look exactly like the teacher or the person next to us.

Yin invites an individual intuitive approach to each posture (& for some people, they may want to lie in savasana the entire time and that is also welcome!).

This is one of the big reasons why we make use of props in yin yoga such as blocks and bolsters - it's not necessarily to make the shape more restorative or relaxing but to help each individual customise a pose so that they can actually reach the fascia, the yin tissues that the shape is trying to reach.

Straining and stretching the muscles to force the body into a certain shape is the opposite of what we are trying to achieve in yin, which is complete muscular relaxation so that we can reach the dense yin tissues lying deep within.

What is your favourite way to use props in yin?

When we practice yin we use gravity as our guiding force - there is actually only one yin posture that doesn't use gravity as an assistant.

Gravity does the talking and the body does the listening.

Yin is a conversation between our body and gravity.

We often forget about this ever-present force, because it is always acting upon us. This force is what grounds us, it literally created the earth and keeps us pinned to it!

We are unconsciously resisting it.

Other times, especially during a yin practice, we consciously surrender to gravity and allow it to slowly shape our bodies.

The message from gravity is to slow down and give way, to trust and surrender.

This is how the practice of yin yoga allows us to reestablish our body-mind connection to release what no longer serves us.

Gravity allows us to practice the art of letting go & surrendering.

Do you know what shape doesn't use the force of gravity?

Here's a clue: 🌙

Yin Yoga is a method to counter our Yang lifestyles and bring more harmony and balance to our lives and the world 🌎

Yin is the polarity of yang. Yang represents the masculine, solar energy - it's signified by heat, outward movement, action, summer, the sun and in our body, the muscles.

Many of us spend our lives completely dominated by this energy! From going to work every day to running a household, socialising with family and friends and on top of that trying to squeeze in exercise or a strong yoga practice.

This can lead us to feel out of balance, burnt out and exhausted 🥱

With yin yoga, you are invited to welcome in the opposing more feminine energies. Yin is signified by feminine lunar energy, the moon, inward movement, rest, darkness, winter and in our body, the fascia.

By inviting more yin energy into your life you will find yourself more in harmony, by turning your gaze inwards you will find a greater sense of clarity and will feel more relaxed and rejuvenated.

Another lovely side effect of yin yoga is that it also creates more space in the body, making it a more comfortable place to be.

Yin Yoga can help to create a balanced and complete yoga practice alongside Yang styles of yoga and other more strenuous forms of exercise.

Give yin yoga a try with me online! I teach via zoom every second Sunday at 4pm EST (Monday AM in NZ) & Thursday evenings at 6.30pm NZDT.

Yin yoga is a simple, spacious and gentle practice for everybody.

Through the application of key principles, we create a safe container to turn inwards.

In yin, we focus on working with the fascia of the body which requires complete muscular relaxation.

The main difference between yin and other more yang styles of yoga such as vinyasa is that we hold each posture for up to 7 minutes.

During a yin class, we move through 4 phases:
1. Create a shape
2. Find stillness
3. Hold for a time (where the magic happens!)
4. Carefully release

Yin postures can look different between different people depending on their levels of flexibility. Each posture can be customised with props and variations to target the specific myofascial meridian system that the posture is aiming to work with.

Have you done yin before? 🧘🏼‍♀️

𑁍 The lotus 𑁍

This magnificent flower rises from the muddy water and opens up towards the sky every day and is a symbol of spiritual awakening.

Honestly, these lotus flowers in Ubud were so big and so utterly perfect - they actually looked fake!!

Humbled by the essence of the lotus.
