For myself and Kat what surprised us the most was how emotional the trying to conceive journey was. Before starting, we thought it would mostly be using the right tools, and following the steps correctly. We didn’t fully realise how much hope you can place on each cycle, or how quickly a month can feel like a rollercoaster of excitement, waiting, second-guessing, and disappointment.

We were also surprised by how much patience it takes. Even when you’re doing everything “right,” there are still so many factors outside your control and that can be incredibly humbling.

Another big surprise was how isolating it felt. We had fertility issues and was going through this struggles quietly and this made us think we were the only one finding it harder than expected.

But on the positive side, we were surprised by how empowering it felt to learn more about our bodies, understand our cycles, and take an active role in the process. That experience is a big part of why Hapū Helpers exists today - to make others feel more informed, supported, and less alone on their own journey.
