Lomi Lomi Massage: A Combination of Love and Intention

Before I learned how to take care of my body and mind, I lived with frequent crippling anxiety. Now as a massage therapist, I help people their anxiety experience and find relief with supportive touch and listening.

I knew that my body and mind needed something desperately, and I had some pretty good ideas about what. If only I could eat better, if only I could exercise. If I had better boundaries and better self care. But moment by frantic moment, I could hardly get in enough calories of junk, much less balanced complete meals. I could hardly drag myself out of bed, much less go for a run. It’s not enough to intellectually understand that certain changes would help. Anxiety can glitch up the the basic drive to function. It can make a powerful vortex, repeating the most useless impulses while silencing the impulses that could interrupt the cycle.

While the effects of massage are not permanent, they are profound. The peaceful environment of a massage practice, the intentional and nurturing touch of a massage therapist, and the decision to care for one’s self by getting a massage, all contribute to the increase in wellbeing a massage can inspire. For a person struggling with generalized anxiety disorder, making to the time to restore parasympathetic nervous activity through massage can make a significant impact in the short term, and potentially promote a shift in direction toward wellness.
