Some good news to kick us off in 2025! Starting 20th February, running for 6 weeks through to 27th March - thanks to funding from the Cerebral Palsy Society of New Zealand, we are now offering an additional session for STEPS on a Thursday morning, based with our friends at Spectroom PLAY ZONE.

STEPS sessions are designed to deliver therapy in a fun and engaging way, promoting development across all areas. These sessions provide an opportunity to connect with other families and children facing similar challenges, while benefiting from the expertise of highly experienced therapists in a small group setting.

STEPS offers a chance to boost the direct therapy input your child receives by complementing the health services they already access. We can support your child’s existing therapy goals and are happy to collaborate with any other professionals involved in their care.

Limited spaces available for the funded sessions. Cost is $20 per session to cover the venue use.

Here are the faces behind the magic of the MightyKids hydrotherapy programme. There's Shelly, our amazing team admin support whom many of you would have spoken to and of course Corinne & Lynette who are in the pool with the kids. A thank you goes out to our fantastic group of volunteers, medical and physiotherapy students, as well as the support of the Cerebral Palsy Society of New Zealand and Wilson Home Trust. Looking forward to welcoming a couple of new additions to the group for 2025!

Beginning in November 2024: We're excited to launch a new programme of integrated therapy for preschool children (1-5 years) living with physical disabilities, named STEPS - Specialised Therapy Enriched Play Sessions.

These weekly sessions run from 10am-12pm on a Monday or Friday and will be held at Spectroom - NZ's Disabilities PLAY ZONE, led by a physiotherapist and speech language therapist providing high quality learning experiences for children, personalised to their physical and communication needs.

For a limited time, a discounted rate applies. In addition, families who are current financial members can use the CP society getPhysical e-card system to further subside the costs. More details and a link to register is available at

Hydrotherapy at the Wilson Centre – Monday/Wednesday/Friday afternoons

The team at MightyKids Rehab (MKR) are excited to be able to partner with the Wilson Home Trust (WHT) in delivering a community hydrotherapy programme developed for
children and young people living with physical disabilities.
MightyKids Rehab is a community-based service dedicated to providing specialist level care for individuals with physical needs to maximise their potential.
This is offering an 8-week term-based programme that utilises goal setting and outcome-based tools, with 1:1 physiotherapist led sessions held at the Wilson Centre during weekday
afternoons.

Families can register directly at https://www.mightykidsrehab.co.nz/services.

A letter of support is required from the child’s therapist or doctor outlining aims and potential benefits sought through hydrotherapy.
Grant funding may be sought through the Wilson Home Trust and families may also wish to use their Cerebral Palsy Society of New Zealand getPhysical e-card towards this.

Do you have experience or know someone who been an inpatient at the Wilson Centre following injury or illness affecting the brain, spinal cord or nerves? A team of researchers from the National Child Rehabilitation Service, Auckland University of Technology and Iwi United would like to hear what you think are the most important priorities for future research at the Wilson Centre. Please share with your contacts and community. A link to the survey can be found through https://redcap.aut.ac.nz/surveys/?s=NWECJ3XDNPFKCNYH.

We are keen to support this new research initiative that seeks to share the voices and stories of families who have gone through a procedure, known as Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy for children with CP. https://youtu.be/bR2OFnNK7eI?feature=shared
If you or someone you know has experience with this, please encourage them to reach out to the research team and be involved.

Great to see that there was a dedicated Paediatric session at the New Zealand Orthopaedic Association meeting in Nelson the weekend that has just past. Our own Dr Jimmy Chong was an invited guest speaker and shared about "Challenges in the assessment and management of hypertonia in cerebral palsy" - explaining ultrasound and botulinum toxin injecting techniques, as well as the use of different medical treatment options.
