Yoga is a practice of connection- to breath, to body, to one another, and to Truth.
At Yoga Aotearoa, our commitment to yoga goes beyond the mat. We believe that practicing yoga means showing up for justice, compassion, and the collective liberation of all people.

This Saturday, we are joining the peaceful protest across the Harbour Bridge to call for an end to the ongoing genocide in Gaza and to demand that the New Zealand government Sanction Israel now.

For nearly a year, the Palestinian people have endured unimaginable violence, displacement, and destruction. As a yoga community grounded in the principle of ahimsa (non-violence), we cannot look away.

We stand in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for freedom, dignity, and peace.

🕊️ Peaceful Protest: Harbour Bridge March
📅 Saturday, 13 September
🕘 Meet at 9:30am sharp
📍 Onepoto Domain

Bring walking shoes, water, and a sign if you can. We’ll be walking together in solidarity, guided by love and justice.

Join us as we take yoga off the mat and into the world.

Your Daily Reminder:
Be here now. 🌿

The past is a story we’ve already told.
The future is a mystery still unfolding.
Right now - this moment - is all we truly have.

When your mind races ahead or drifts away, gently bring yourself back to your breath, your body, your senses.
Notice the feeling of your feet on the ground. The rhythm of your inhale and exhale. The sounds around you.
This is presence. This is life- unfiltered and real.

Being here, fully and gently, is one of the kindest gifts you can give yourself.
No need to fix, change, or hurry. Just be.

Your Daily Reminder:
It’s okay to rest. 🌙

You don’t have to earn it.
You don’t have to justify it.
Rest isn’t laziness. It’s nourishment.

In a culture that glorifies productivity, it can feel uncomfortable to slow down. But your body isn’t built to be in “go mode” all the time. Constant doing keeps your nervous system in a heightened state, and over time, that leads to exhaustion, disconnection, and burnout.

Rest is how we regulate.
How we heal.
How we come back to ourselves.

So if you’re tired, listen.
Take a nap. Sit in silence. Do nothing for a while.
Let rest be the practice today. Your worth isn't tied to your output.

You are allowed to pause.
You are allowed to restore.

Your Daily Reminder:
Check your posture. 🧘‍♂️

Take a quick scan of your body…
Are your shoulders creeping up toward your ears? Is your spine rounding forward?
We spend so much of our day unconsciously folding in- into screens, into stress, into ourselves.

But your posture isn't just about alignment- it's a reflection of how you're feeling, and it has a direct impact on your nervous system.
An open, upright posture supports deeper breathing, a calmer mind, and a greater sense of confidence and clarity.

So let’s reset together:
Roll your shoulders back and down.
Lift through the crown of your head.
Soften your belly.
Let your spine rise long and light.

You deserve to take up space.
Let your body remember what it feels like to stand with ease and presence.

Your Daily Reminder:
Unclench your jaw. 💆‍♀️

Take a moment… right now.
Bring your awareness to your jaw. Is it tight? Are your teeth touching?
Without even realizing it, many of us hold tension here, especially during moments of stress, anxiety, or deep concentration.

Chronic jaw clenching is often a sign that your nervous system is in a state of high alert.
By softening the jaw, you’re releasing muscular tension, but you’re also telling your body it’s safe to relax.

Try this:
Gently part your teeth.
Soften your tongue away from the roof of your mouth.
Relax the muscles around your ears and temples.
Feel that? That’s your body shifting into a more relaxed and easeful state.

These little check-ins matter. Your body is always listening.

Your Daily Reminder:
Take a deep breath. 🌬️

When life feels like it’s moving too fast, a single deep breath can shift everything.
It might seem simple, but conscious breathing is one of the most powerful tools we have to regulate the nervous system.

Slow, intentional breaths send a signal to your body that you are safe- easing the grip of stress, calming the mind, and softening tension in the body. This is your parasympathetic nervous system at work, helping you return to rest, to presence, to peace.

So take a moment today, right now even!
Inhale deeply through your nose…
Hold…
Exhale slowly through your mouth.
And notice how different your body feels.

You're allowed to pause. You're allowed to breathe. You're allowed to come home to yourself.

Ishvara Pranidhana is the practice of surrender.
Not giving up, but softening our grip on the things we were never meant to control.

It’s trusting that we don’t have to hold everything together on our own.
That there’s something bigger- call it life, the universe, spirit, source- that we can lean into.

It asks:
🕊️ What am I trying to force that needs to unfold?
🧘 Where can I stop pushing and start trusting?

In practice, Ishvara Pranidhana looks like:
🌀 Letting your breath guide your movement, instead of your ego
🙏 Asking for support when you usually try to do it all yourself
📿 Remembering that rest is part of the process
💭 Accepting that you won’t always have all the answers, and that’s okay!

Surrender doesn’t mean passivity.
It means showing up fully and releasing attachment to the outcome.

This week, ask yourself:
What would it feel like to stop gripping and start trusting?

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do… is let go.

Svadhyaya- study of the Self

Svadhyaya isn’t just reading ancient texts (though that can be part of it).
It’s about turning inward.
Paying attention.
Getting curious about who you are beneath the chatter of the mind.

It’s the daily practice of asking:
🪞 What patterns am I repeating?
🧠 What thoughts am I believing without questioning?
🫀 What do I need to unlearn so I can live more truthfully?

In practice, Svadhyaya looks like:
🧘 Noticing your reactions on and off the mat
📓 Journaling what’s real for you, not just what sounds good
📚 Reading words that help you remember who you are
🛑 Catching yourself mid-habit and choosing a different response

This work can be uncomfortable, but it's so liberating.
Because the more you understand yourself, the more you stop living on autopilot and start living on purpose.

This week, slow down and ask:
What am I learning about myself right now, and what am I ready to change?

The path inward isn’t always easy.
But it’s always worth it.

⁣Tapas is about discipline, continuing to show up even when it’s not easy, and willpower.

It’s the inner fire that keeps us going, especially when we’d rather not.
It’s choosing growth over comfort.
Consistency over excuses.

Tapas isn’t loud or flashy.
Sometimes, it’s just rolling out your mat when your mind says “not today.”

It asks:
🔥 Where am I holding back?
💪 What would change if I kept showing up, even in small ways?

In practice, Tapas looks like:
🧘 Sticking with your practice even when motivation fades
📵 Turning off distractions so you can focus on what matters
😤 Breathing through discomfort instead of backing away from it
🕯️ Letting challenges shape you, not shut you down

Tapas reminds us: real transformation takes heat.
Not punishment, but devotion.

This week, ask yourself:
What would it look like to stay committed, not perfectly, but wholeheartedly?

Discipline isn’t about being hard on yourself.
It’s about caring enough to keep going.
