Thought you would agree with the first point!!!

Thought for the Day: The Well-Lived Life … secrets of a 102-year-old medic. An interview with Dr Gladys McGarey in the UK Sunday Times caught our attention last weekend. Glady’s pioneered holistic medicine in America in the early 1970’s and at 102 years of age is proving you are never too old to publish a book (!) Glady’s lives in Scottsdale Arizona and remains active preferring to navigate her garden on a tricycle (pictured) these days. The book covers off her (holistic) approach to living a joyful life which has clearly worked for her. Here are a few extracts from the article that resonated:
• Massage – now here’s an idea! Dr Glady’s is a big believer in massage as an important part of the immune system protecting us from infection and disease. For over 50 years she has had a weekly massage. “Touch nourishes the mind and soul, everyone needs a safe and comforting touch from others, if you can afford it have a massage, otherwise curl up with a loved one or a pet. Hug people regularly, I get many hugs throughout the week, if I’m lucky enough to hug a grandchild even better!”
• Humour – its good for your endocrine system. “When you’re embarrassed or ashamed, or feel criticised, try to laugh. Laughter has an uncanny ability to cut through stress.”
• Napping – Glady’s tends to be in bed around 8pm but since turning 90 (back in 2011!) has an hour’s nap after lunch. “Routines have to be flexible, don’t bow to your routine or you’ll end up missing out”.
• Optimism – Glady’s is definitely in the glass half full category – waking every morning to review her 10-year plan, having a cup of black coffee and raisin bran with a few stewed prunes and getting on with her day. “I see everything, and I mean everything, in the positive”.
• Movement – “If you don’t keep moving in life you get stuck. Movement is the energy essential to life. I still go up and down the stairs in my home several times a day. I’ve never used exercise equipment at the gym, but I enjoy riding my tricycle”. Glady’s went to look after villagers in the mountains of Afghanistan at 86 and still has a daily step count of target of 3,800 for her walker!
• Relationships – loneliness has the effect on longevity of smoking 15 ci******es per day. The quality of our relationships at 50 is the greatest predictor of our health at 80. “We need to borrow cups of sugar; we need to ask our neighbours instead of apps”. Glady’s advocates that to build stronger communities we need to start with our neighbours, then move on to our work colleagues, then the supermarket checkers, uber drivers, dentists, and dog groomers – “make everyone your friend, even if only in a limited way”.

Here are some of the benefits of massage:

1. Relaxation and Stress Relief: Massage is well-known for its ability to promote relaxation and relieve stress. The gentle touch and rhythmic movements during a massage can help calm the mind, release tension, and reduce anxiety, providing a much-needed break from the demands of daily life.

2. Muscle Tension and Pain Relief: Massage therapy can effectively alleviate muscle tension and pain. The manipulation of soft tissues during a massage helps increase blood circulation, relax muscles, and reduce inflammation, leading to relief from conditions like muscle strains, headaches, and chronic pain.

3. Improved Blood Circulation: Through various massage techniques, blood flow is enhanced, allowing oxygen and nutrients to reach the muscles and organs more efficiently. Improved circulation can aid in the healing process, reduce swelling, and promote overall health.

4. Enhanced Flexibility and Range of Motion: Regular massages can contribute to increased flexibility and improved range of motion. The targeted manipulation of muscles, tendons, and joints during a massage helps loosen tightness, improve mobility, and prevent muscle imbalances.

5. Stress Hormone Reduction: Massage therapy has been found to reduce the levels of stress hormones, such as cortisol, in the body. By lowering these hormones, massage can help regulate mood, improve sleep quality, and promote an overall sense of well-being.

6. Immune System Boost: Research suggests that massage can positively impact the immune system. By reducing stress and promoting relaxation, massage therapy may contribute to an increase in natural killer cells, which are essential for defending the body against pathogens and bolstering the immune response.

7. Mental and Emotional Well-being: In addition to its physical benefits, massage can have a profound impact on mental and emotional well-being. It can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, promote a sense of inner calm, and improve overall wellbeing
