National Science Challenge

Better science together for a better start in life. Our children are our future.

We want to give them the best possible start in life. Getting a good start includes being a healthy weight, learning successfully and being mentally well. That’s what all families, whānau and communities want for their tamariki. But obesity, learning and mental health are challenges for some children. A Better Start is the National Science Challenge working to help them. Our mission is to find bet

ter ways to predict, prevent and treat obesity, learning and mental health problems in children and teenagers. Our job is to make science work for people. We believe we can do that only when we work with communities, and draw together indigenous and Western approaches to science. E Tipu e Rea

General information

Our research strategy is new for New Zealand because it will: * draw together experts from different institutions - over 75 researchers from seven universities, four District Health Boards and other bodies will work on initial projects * draw together experts from different disciplines - scientists specialising in paediatrics, education and psychology will collaborate with health and education experts, epidemiologists, big data analysts and economists * target children as early as possible in life – when we can make the most difference * target the children most in need – Māori, Pacific and less affluent children * engage families and communities – Māori and Pacific communities will help us design, execute and interpret our research in a way that’s culturally right for them * take a holistic view of obesity, learning and mental health, which are usually studied in isolation.
