Our speech language therapist (SLT) Chris will get a tattoo for START if we achieve our goal of raising $30,000 in October! đŸ–‹ïž

Chris speaks about why he’s making this commitment:

“I already have a lot of tattoos that reflect what matters most to me. For me, a tattoo of the START logo with the two speech bubbles would be a permanent symbol of my vocation. Psychology and medicine have their respective symbols, but SLT doesn’t.

To me, the overlapping speech bubbles represent the partnership with clients as they navigate communication challenges. It’s a real privilege to help improve someone’s ability to communicate and their quality of life." 💙💚💬

Music is also a big part of Chris’ life, with his band Chasing South (check them out on Spotify). This is why he’s writing and recording 30 songs in 30 days as his challenge.

At the end of October, these will be uploaded to Bandcamp as "Thirty Days of Fall". You can hear Chris’ daily compositions on Instagram .

Yesterday we celebrated Joel (speaking beautifully in this video) and his amazing milestone of fundraising over $1,000 and counting. Keep going Joel!

We ALSO want to celebrate his parents, whānau and friends who are backing Joel in his challenge to support START .

We have a wonderful quote from Sam, Joel’s dad, that shows what can be done when you have the right people around you.

“As a parent you would do anything you could do to help your kids and in our case we could.

But we know there are many more waiting to be helped.

I would give everything I could to help and provide START with a 1,000 more staff knowing what they have done for Joel.

They have provided him with the tools, to not only learn about his stutter, but also to give him the confidence to talk smoothly, to rap, to have a voice and not be afraid to use it!

They say actions speak louder than words but, in this case, I feel words mean so much more.

It starts with someone saying something
 smooth or not. Loud or in sign language. So I’m going to start by saying you’re the man Joel!

Keep talking to encourage and help others it’s the most powerful tool we have.

Last night we were featured on Seven Sharp!

One of our young adult clients and volunteers, Matt, shared his personal experience of living with a stutter - reminding us all that a little patience goes a long way, and that it’s okay to stutter.â˜ș

The wonderful Nikki Hart Nutrition Ltd , our 30 for START ambassador, also spoke about what it was like growing up with a stutter.

We're truly moved by the incredible challenge one of our young people is taking on đŸ’Ș💛 Freya’s initiative is full of heart - take a look at what she’s doing:

“My speech therapist Brittney taught me that my stutter is like butterflies in a jar. When I try to keep them all inside, they flutter around and feel trapped. But when I open the jar and let them fly, they’re free! And so am I. Every butterfly deserves to fly, just like my words! I am going to make a piece of butterfly art every day for 30 days to help raise money for START so they can support more people who stutter, like me.“

We are loving Nikki's candid radio interview with Joel from MORE FM Queenstown about her stutter as a child. Nikki says, “The thing I hated most when I was little, was having to say my name at school. It just terrified me.”

She said it was so bad that she “almost stopped talking
without the speech and language therapists helping me
I wouldn’t have a voice”.

That’s why Nikki has taken on the challenge of 30 for START and she will be trying 30 foods she’s never eaten before! 😆

We are super excited to see what Nikki is going to eat and what she has to say about it. 💚

It’s been a big week at START!

On Tuesday, we had our biggest Play & Connect yet with 9 whānau joining us!

It was awesome to see tamariki aged 3–7 playing together while their parents connected and had a chat with one of our speech-language therapists.

Then on Thursday, 9 kids aged 8–13 came along to Come. Be. Do. – and they had lots of fun together - Nerf wars, Lego, crafts, biscuit decorating, Mario Kart, and just hanging out.

These days make such a difference in helping young people feel connected and supported.

Thanks to Daniel, Matt and Conor – who helped out.

Thanks to everyone who came – we love seeing children and young people who stutter having fun together.

Paddy Gower interviewed our amazing client Daniel, about what it’s like to have a stutter. Some of the incredible quotes Daniel said are:

“You don’t have to get rid of your stutter
understand it's part of who you are.”

Our speech language therapist Chris, described Daniel’s poem as “raw, unfiltered and vulnerable” which is not the most common thing for teenage boys to be in NZ!

The Stuttering Treatment and Research Trust (START) is a Charitable Trust based in Greenlane, Auckland. We work to increase awareness about stuttering and to provide effective, evidence based treatment for people of all ages who stutter.

For over 20 years we have been New Zealand’s only specialists in stuttering therapy, and our team of expert Speech Language Therapists are passionate about supporting every single Kiwi who has a stutter.
