Are you a teacher who has a child in your class who stutters? Are you unsure how you can support them? 🤔

Please download our “Teachers’ Guide for Working with Young People who Stutter”

We have made this FREELY available because we recognize the importance of teachers being informed about stuttering, and how this understanding affects a young person’s learning and life at school.

At START our research and collaboration with universities both in Aotearoa and abroad, make us a centre of excellence and cutting-edge knowledge.

It’s been a while since we featured some of the creative writing from our tamariki, but we know you love it! 🥰

Please enjoy this wonderful poem from Sammie, age 12.

Sammie’s writing evokes beautiful imagery, we are so proud to be able to share it here. 💙💚

Stuttering

Stuttering looks like paper burning,
all crumpled up and disappearing,
but with help turns out as a new
flame that is bold and bright.

Stuttering feels like a butterfly
that is stuck in its cocoon beating
helpless against a barrier that
seems unbreakable, but with some
effort it’s free and feels the rays of
sunshine beaming down on it.

Stuttering smells like new paint,
different and overpowering but
fresh and distinct.

Stuttering tastes like an unripe
pineapple, that is sour and tough
But becomes ripe and sweet.

Stuttering sounds like a bird having
a voice that makes a horrible shriek
but then starts to sing a sweet
melody note by note.

How to Support Someone Who Stutters

Everyone who stutters is different, but most people who stutter appreciate it when you keep eye contact and let them finish speaking.🫂

Here are some other ways to help.👇

💙Be there for them
💚Stand up for them
💙Respect their choices
💚Don’t give them advice on how to stop stuttering
💙Don’t joke about stuttering

We had a wonderful evening the other week at Janelle’s leaving event. Thank you to everyone who came along. 😍

We had speeches from our Board Chair Eric Allan, and Board member Dean Cook, then the floor was opened up for others to share their special thoughts and anecdotes about Janelle and what she has given them. There was a tremendous amount of love in the room!💙💚💙💚

Thank you also to Claire Green and the Hearing House for hosting the event.🎂🎉
