This week we hosted TWO school holiday events!

✨ Play & Connect | For 3-6 years - This week we had 5 families join us for our play group. Play & Connect is a great opportunity for parents to connect with others and speak with some of our Speech Language Therapists.

✨ Come Be Do | For 8-14 years - We had 12 tamariki join us for Come Be Do today. Our Taskmaster Challenge was a big hit today - congratulations to those who took out the frozen t-shirt competition and went home with a START t-shirt. Special thanks again to our amazing teen and adult helpers - we couldn't do it without you!

Our next Play & Connect and Come Be Do events will be held in the September/October holidays.

A great day was had by Team START at Round the Bays in Auckland on the weekend. 🏃

Unmissable in our bright green t-shirts, it was a fun day out with a bit of walking, a bit of running and lots of smiles! 😍

Special thanks to David Findlow and his family for hosting breakfast before the race, and to Dean and Declan (current and previous Board members) for helping with the BBQ afterwards.

Thank you also to the people who donated - we raised $5,727!

Once more we’re grateful for the wonderful whānau who support START.💙💚

Our first online adult support group for 2026 is coming up next week on Wednesday 11th March.

Our online adult support group meets monthly via Zoom and provides a welcoming, supportive space to talk openly about stuttering.

It’s an opportunity to connect with others, share experiences, offer encouragement, and help shape the direction of the group together. Join us as we continue building a community of understanding and support.

This year, the group will be meeting every three weeks, with each session focused on a specific topic. The hope is that this gives everyone more flexibility and makes it easier to plan which meetings people would like to attend.

If you're interested, email us at support@start.org.nz and we'll send you the link. We'd love to see you there!

Upcoming dates for 2026:

11 March – Freestyle/Improv Speeches

1 April – Speech Therapy: A Client Perspective – what helped/didn’t help

22 April – Stuttering in a Second Language

13 May – Game Night – interactive and fun group games

3 June – Riding the Wave of Stuttering – what do you do to help yourself in a stuttering moment

We're delighted to announce that Carolyn Pye has joined the Board as a new member.

She is the mother of a previous client and has extensive HR and governance experience. We are delighted to welcome Carolyn and know she will be a valued addition to the Board.

Carolyn is delighted to have the opportunity to join the START Board as she and her family have had first hand experience of the positive impact of START for young people who stutter, and their families.

Her son received support from START since he was 8 years old, and Carolyn has seen his self confidence blossom as a result. She feels passionate about supporting our organisation to continue the wonderful and impactful mahi so other young people and families can experience the same benefits her family have.

Welcome Carolyn! 💚💙

The START whānau would like to acknowledge with deep affection and gratitude, our Board member Geoff Cardale.

Geoff was one of the Foundation Trustees of START in 1993 continuing until 1997 and re-joined the Board in 2019. He has used his own life experiences to help others, particularly young people, who stutter.

With an interest in START spanning 30 years, Geoff has decided to step down as a Board member of START. We are hugely grateful for Geoff’s contributions to START over that time.

At our recent Board meeting, Geoff shared his reflections on having a stutter. His is a moving story of quiet resilience and we encourage you to read it here.

“This story is a reflection of the importance of what we do as a group of people here today, and as an organisation. That we are giving the ability for children to speak up and speak freely, to break that silence, embarrassment, or whatever cycle they are on."
