Leg Length Discrepancy: Structural vs. Functional 🦴
Ever wondered about the different types of leg length discrepancies? Let's shed some light on "Structural" vs. "Functional" short legs!

Q: What's a "Structural" short leg? A: This term refers to actual differences in bone length between your right and left legs. It's a physical distinction.

But here's where it gets interesting: Your bones, both above and below your knees, might be identical in length, even if you've been told otherwise! Or perhaps you've heard the term "Functional" leg length difference. This is a game-changer, and here's why it's crucial to know the difference:

A "Functional" leg length difference means there's a functional issue - it's not about the actual bone length. Often, this is related to a misaligned pelvis where the right and left sides aren't functioning the same, making one leg "appear" longer, though it's not in reality.

Some healthcare pros might just examine your feet when you're lying down and declare one leg shorter. But hold on...
Imagine this: You're buying two pieces of wood, and they must be exactly the same length. Would you only look at one end and hope for the best? Of course not! You'd measure both ends and check them side by side.

That's why at Advanced Therapeutics, we take precise measurements of your pelvis, the upper and lower bones of each leg separately. We never clump them together into one measurement just by looking at your feet!

Stay informed, and remember, understanding the type of leg length difference you have is crucial because treatment approaches vary. If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

DIY Tip for Uncovering a Small Hemipelvis 🪑
Ready to explore another DIY technique for detecting a potential small hemipelvis? Let's dive in!
Step 1: Ensure your floor is level (use a spirit level if needed) to eliminate any tilt or slant.
Step 2: Find a firm (non-padded) surface and sit upright on it with your feet flat on the ground.
Step 3: Close your eyes and become very still, tuning into how you feel. It might seem normal at first, but stay with us...
Step 4: Now, grab 10-20 sheets of paper (standard 80gsm paper) and try this:
Place the sheets under the "sit" bone on one side.
Take note of how you feel. Do you feel higher or different?
Try the same on the other side. What's the sensation?
Step 5: Observe:
Is there a noticeable difference between the two sides?
Does one side feel higher while the other feels okay?

📏 Quick Conversion: Just to give you a sense, 10 sheets of 80gsm paper roughly equal 1mm.

What does it mean? If you sense that one side feels higher and more comfortable with the lift, it might suggest a small hemipelvis on the side that feels okay without the lift. Your structural difference is worth investigating!
🛋️ Please note: The number of paper sheets needed can vary depending on the firmness of the surface you sit on. Also, consider any findings in relation to the presence (or absence) of a short leg on one side or the other.

DIY Tip #2: Finding Balance in Bare Feet
Ready for another DIY trick to uncover a potential short leg or small hemipelvis? Let's get started!
Step 1: Ensure your floor is level (use a spirit level if needed).
Step 2: Stand barefoot with your toes pointing straight ahead and your feet about a fist-width apart
Step 3: Close your eyes and remain very still.
Step 4: Pay close attention:
Do you start leaning to one side?
Is there a tendency to fall left or right?
Step 5: Here's where it gets interesting - grab 10 sheets of paper (standard 80gsm paper) and try this:
Place the sheets under the side you're leaning towards. How does it feel?
Then, try the other side. Does it make you feel worse?

🔍 What's it all about? If you notice that adding the paper sheets under one side makes you feel more balanced, it could be an indication of a short leg or small hemipelvis on that side. Your structural difference might be in the pelvis, the leg, or both.

📏 Just a quick FYI: 10 sheets of 80gsm paper roughly equal 1mm.
Remember, this is a simple DIY test. For a thorough evaluation and tailored guidance, consider consulting with Advanced Therapeutics! Stay tuned for more DIY insights! 📐

DIY Tip #1 for a Balanced You
Here's a simple yet insightful tip to check if you might have a short leg or a small hemipelvis. All you need are your well-worn shoes - they don't have to be brand new or fancy running shoes, any well-worn pair will do the trick!
Step 1: Take off your shoes and place them on a flat surface.
Step 2: Examine the wear pattern:
Have they worn equally on both sides or is one side more worn out?
Do one of your shoes turn out more than the other?
Step 3: Now, turn your shoes over and inspect the soles:
Is one side more worn out than the other?

🤔 What does this mean? If you notice an uneven wear pattern on your shoes, it could be an indication of a leg length discrepancy or a small hemipelvis. Essentially, your shoes are revealing that they're not providing balanced support.

Using these shoes without addressing the issue may contribute to or worsen your discomfort.

A "short leg" refers to a condition in which one leg is structurally shorter than the other. This difference in leg length can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
-Genetic: Some people are born with legs of slightly different lengths. This is known as inherited leg length differential and is the result of genetic factors inherited from one or both parents.
-Injuries: Traumatic injuries can lead to a structurally short leg by directly influencing growth plates or bone development, or by increasing or decreasing overall leg length in the healing process after the growing years.
-Surgical Interventions: Surgeries involving the leg or hip can sometimes result in a leg length discrepancy if not properly managed during the procedure.
-Pathology: Conditions such as Perthes Disease or hip dysplasia, )which is a condition of abnormal hip joint development) can lead to uneven leg lengths.

Having a structurally short leg (often previously undetected) can cause many musculoskeletal conditions including scoliosis, back and joint pain, headaches/migraines, disc degeneration and even arthritis of the hips or spine. It’s always important to diagnose and accurately correct all leg length differentials as a priority when treating chronic pain or movement difficulties.

Did you know that a small hemipelvis can be just as harmful to your spinal health as a short leg? In fact, according to Dr. Janet Travell (President J. F. Kennedy's White House physician) and Dr. David Simons, more people have this issue than a short leg.

But here's the catch: "The small hemipelvis is more neglected than the short leg as a source of spinal distortions that produce chronic muscle strain," say these field experts.

If you're one of the many who have a small hemipelvis without knowing it, you may have overlooked a source of spinal distortion and a real cause of your pain. Feeling restless or experiencing back pain during long sits? Or maybe you've noticed that one trouser leg is consistently longer than the other. Or you seem to have a much nicer and sexier curve at your waistline on one side!

🔍 The good news: Resolving a small hemipelvis is quick, easy, non-invasive, and budget-friendly once you're aware of it. Why not reach out to Advanced Therapeutics to discover if it's time to address the source of your pain and discomfort?

Ever heard of a "hemipelvis" before? It might sound like a complex term, but it's a crucial part of your anatomy that we're here to demystify!
👉 The pelvis, located at the base of your spine, is made up of two halves called the left and right hemipelvis. Each hemipelvis or “innominate” bone is like a puzzle piece, composed of the ilium, ischium, and p***s bones, which grow separately during your growth and development and fuse together forming one bone in adulthood.

🔍 Why is it important? Understanding the structure and alignment of your two innominate bones is key when it comes to assessing and treating issues related to your pelvis, low back, hips, or more wide-spread pain throughout the body. These bones provide support for your spine, protect your internal organs, and anchor various muscles, ligaments, and tendons.

So, the next time you hear about a hemipelvis, you'll know it's not a mystery but a vital part of your body's support system!

At Advanced Therapeutics we’ll tell you for certain if you do. We’ll also explain what to do about it.

Some opt for heel lifts, while others do nothing. But here's the scoop: both approaches may miss the mark.

Heel lifts, while offering temporary relief, can torque your pelvis, causing wear and tear around the sacrum and sacroiliac joint(s), and cause severe harm over time. Imagine wearing a high heel on one side only!

Skipping the lift isn't the answer either; it creates uneven pressure on the discs in your spine - potentially resulting in a “herniated or bulging’ disc.

The secret? Your sacral bone must be made level so your spine is properly supported. When we find out which part of the leg is short (upper or lower), and when we know precisely how much the difference is (in millimetres), we can make corrections to level your sacral bone. Then your spine is property supported.

Millimetres?? YES! Even tiny changes make massive improvements. Let's fix it right. When you can stand and move with a balanced alignment and better posture, you’ll know you’ve found your answer.

Frustrated by mysterious, lingering pain that just won't quit? You're not alone! It might show up in odd places, have that annoying diffuse quality, and come and go as it pleases. Whether it's in your back, head, shoulder, face, neck, jaw, limbs, or even your hands and feet, it's time to pay attention.

Maybe you've seen doctors or physios, tried various treatments, but it still lacks a diagnostic name. Guess what? You might be dealing with myofascial trigger points that send pain signals to these areas.

The secret to relief lies in finding these triggers and, most importantly, understanding why they're there in the first place. At Advanced Therapeutics, we unravel the 'why' and ensure it doesn't come back. Message us today!
