Scientists at the Institute for Basic Science have revealed a non-invasive way to boost the brain’s natural waste-clearing system—with just gentle mechanical stimulation of facial and neck skin. In mice, this method doubled cerebrospinal fluid outflow and restored impaired drainage in aged animals by compressing superficial cervical lymphatics through the skin—all without drugs or surgery.

They also mapped previously unknown CSF drainage routes via facial lymphatics to submandibular lymph nodes—routes that remain functional even in older subjects. This breakthrough may lead to wearable or clinical devices targeting brain waste clearance, with promising implications for preventing or slowing neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
