Foam rolling for iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS)? This is one painful exercise you can remove from your programme, here’s why:

• The ITB needs to be relatively stiff to do its job of tolerating high loads and storing and releasing energy, so trying to ‘loosen’ your ITB can be counterproductive.

• Compression is thought to be a contributing factor to the development of ITBS, so why would you want to compress it further with a foam roller?

• And one final bombshell – foam rolling does NOT change the stiffness of the ITB (Pepper et al., 2021).

If you feel tight: - adjust training load, check you are recovering enough, and STRENGTHEN

Incidental exercise/snacking.
Hi busy people! Just checking in from the clinic between patients.
Here is what a normal day looks like for me as of late. I may not have time between two kids, work and a traveling husband to exercise how I used to... so I've taken up the age-old physio-advocated practices of exercise snacking and incidental exercise.
Snacking: In between patients I'll spend anywhere from 30 seconds to 10 mins performing certain exercises. Sna
Incidental exercise: Opting for the stairs instead of the lift, parking that extra bit further away from work, and in my case, doing the exercises with my clients.
Snacking and incidental exercises will look different for everyone, depending on your day/work schedule but there are usually ways for most people to add a few exercises into their day. Get creative, and remember, it all adds up!

DRAM/RAD/Diastasis Recti/Abdominal separation.
Most people will have some degree of abdominal separation during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. This is due to the stretching of midline fascia (linea alba) between the re**us abdominis as baby grows throughout pregnancy.
You may notice a doming shape down the centreline of your abdominals when you go to sit up from lying, leaning backwards or when doing exercises that involve the core.
If you are postpartum or still pregnant and notice this, have a chat to your pelvic health physio. They can assess for DRAM and help you to adapt your current exercise programme to manage it.

Exercise-based rehab.
If you're coming to see us for the first time or its the first time you've ever been to a physio, be prepared for a little bit of homework.
Physios advocate for exercise-based rehab which means that we're going to get you moving. This may look like bodyweight, theraband or gym-based exercises or even just an extra walk around the block. Everyone has different starting points, injuries and exercise tolerances so no two client's programme looks the same.
Side note in case you were wondering, physios can always tell when you haven't done your homework 😆

What makes a 'good' physio?

Quite often a client will say they went to x, y, z physio and they were 'amazing' or they 'weren't very good’

Now, us physios are generally rule abiding creatures and aside from the odd rogue here and there, we're bound by scientific research. Every assessment, treatment and piece of advice is steeped in the blood, sweat and tears of researchers over decades.

So, if in theory we all follow the same rules, what makes a 'good' physio?

We believe most of it comes down to communication...

👂 The ability to understand the clients expectations, give feedback for what is realistic and then do their best to help them reach this goal. The physio must also make their expectations clear at the beginning. Physiotherapy treatment is not a passive process and the client needs to be an active participant in their rehab journey

👂 The ability to provide a client the space to unpack what their symptoms mean to them. To understand not just their symptoms but the impact they have. Does it mean they can no longer play with their grandchildren? Or are they afraid of letting the team down because they are not performing their best? Getting to the bottom of what this means for the client is a key element in effective rehabilitation

👂 The ability to adapt an exercise prescription, manual therapy technique, or even the language we use, based on a client's tolerances by seeking feedback throughout the process. There is no ‘one size fits all’ method to successful rehab.

👂 The ability to gain an understanding of a patients beliefs around their injury and symptoms, validate their experience, and gently/tactfully challenge these beliefs if needed with research based evidence to empower a client in their own rehabilitation process.

Some of you may already know that we both also work for the dhb system and come tomorrow, we'll be on strike alongside 10,000 others.
If you've been following the news you may be aware that NZ public healthcare professions that make up allied health will be lining the streets of Auckland.
We are simply asking for fair recognition for the contribution we make to the new zealand public health system every single day.

🌸What is pelvic floor physiotherapy?🌸

Pelvic health physiotherapists are specially trained to assess and treat a wide range of pelvic floor problems in women, men and children such as incontinence, organ prolapse, painful sexual in*******se, bedwetting and pelvic pain. Pelvic floor rehabilitation or re-education is not only about pelvic floor exercises.

The goal of Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy is to improve pelvic floor function through exercises, lifestyle modifications, education and hands on treatment to decrease and eliminate your symptoms. This therapy involves assessing and treating a group of muscles that are involved with urinary, bowel, and sexual function.

👩‍⚕️What is Physiotherapy?👩‍⚕️

Physiotherapy is treatment to restore, maintain, and make the most of a patient's mobility, function, and well-being. Physiotherapy helps through physical rehabilitation, injury prevention, and health and fitness. Physiotherapists get you involved in your own recovery.

We help to restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. It can also help to reduce your risk of injury or illness in the future. It takes a holistic approach that involves the patient directly in their own care.
