Today on , we celebrate the incredible nurses who support people and families facing cancer.

We’re incredibly thankful to the many nurses who advocate for their patients and help them access rehabilitation, exercise, and recovery support after cancer.

From inpatient oncology care teams to specialist cancer nurses across Aotearoa including the amazing teams at Bowel Cancer New Zealand, Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, Blood Cancer NZ, Cancer Society Waikato/Bay of Plenty, Cancer Society Otago Southland, Canopy Cancer Care, and Cancer Society New Zealand.

Thank you for the expertise, compassion, and reassurance you bring during some of life’s most challenging moments.

With close to 1 in 3 likely to face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, the need for skilled, compassionate cancer care and support has never been greater.

What an incredible community effort.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in this year’s Col McNeil Memorial surf event for choosing to support the Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation (PINC & STEEL). We are so grateful for the time, energy, generosity, sponsorship, auctions, raffles, volunteering, and community spirit that helped raise an amazing $6,500 to support people recovering from cancer.

A very special thank you to our certified PINC & STEEL cancer rehab physio Sonia Mitchell NorthWest Physio + for all the work behind the scenes helping bring the day together, and to Gregory Skinner and the amazing team at Maori Bay Board Riders Club for hosting such a special event. We are incredibly grateful for your support.

Your generosity is helping more New Zealanders access the rehabilitation support they need to reclaim their lives after cancer. 🩷💙

One of the biggest challenges in healthcare is the time it takes for research to translate into everyday practice. We are super proud to be part of a partnership turning evidence into action, now.

We’re incredibly excited to see our first patients starting this week.

The CHALLENGE RCT is one of the most significant breakthroughs in bowel cancer survival in years.

Earlier this year, we had the privilege of meeting Kerry Courneya, whose amazing work underpins this programme. As he has said, this is about shifting exercise from a “nice to have” to a recognised part of treatment.

Not just improving how people feel.
Not just improving function.
But influencing survival.

And importantly, this isn’t about telling people to “move more.”
It requires the same thinking as any other treatment - structured, prescribed, supported, and delivered by trained professionals.

Through CHALLENGE: Movement for Life, we we are now delivering this in practice. Turning world-leading evidence into real-world care through the Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation (PINC & STEEL)’s network of cancer rehab physiotherapists, fully funded by Bowel Cancer New Zealand

We’re honoured to have Lou James MNZM joining us as a guest speaker at the Canterbury Regional Conference 2026.

Lou is an internationally recognised leader in oncology rehabilitation, founder and CEO of the Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation PINC & STEEL and will speak about cancer rehabilitation and the work they do to support recovery and wellbeing.

📍 Ashburton Event Centre
📅 Thursday, 16 July 9:30am - 3:30pm

For more than 20 years, Lou has championed a simple but powerful belief: cancer care must be about more than survival - people want their lives back. Under her leadership, the Foundation has helped build cancer rehabilitation into oncology care pathways across New Zealand, invested over $5 million to fund access for those most in need, and developed an education academy supporting physiotherapists in 24 countries.

Appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2017 for services to people with cancer, Lou is deeply committed to helping people reclaim the strength, confidence, and quality of life they deserve after cancer.

All women rural@heart including members and non-members are welcome.

We’re proud to be delivering CHALLENGE: Movement for Life in partnership with Bowel Cancer New Zealand.

This fully funded programme supports people with stage 2 and stage 3 bowel cancer to safely build and maintain physical activity following treatment – guided by our network of experienced cancer rehabilitation physiotherapists.

We know staying active after treatment isn’t always easy, but with the right structure and support, it can make a real difference.

This programme is designed to help people build sustainable habits and support their long-term health and recovery.

Now available in Auckland, with more regions to come.

Pioneering cancer rehabilitation in NZ

20 years ago, it wasn’t part of cancer care. So we built it.

It began in a physiotherapy clinic - with a belief that recovery mattered just as much as treatment.

So we started by building capability. Training physiotherapists. Creating a network. Establishing a new standard of care.

As the work grew, so did the trust - with oncology teams, with patients, with communities.

People are referred to us when they are at their lowest point; some can’t walk to the letterbox, return to work, or care for their children. Others are too fatigued, anxious, or deconditioned to begin recovery on their own.

Through access to cancer rehabilitation, we support faster recovery, greater independence, and a return to everyday life - with the benefits extending beyond the individual to their whānau, as they get back on their feet and participate in life again after treatment.

Creating change in the health system is not easy. With a small team, we’ve focused on what we can control and where we can make a real difference. Rather than waiting for change, we’ve built it. Step by step, service by service, person by person.

This has only been possible through the collective effort of our community - from thousands of volunteer hours at Board level to the individuals who give their time on the ground, supporting events, fundraising, and connection across the county.

Alongside this, we are incredibly grateful to our physio providers and the partners who have walked with us over the years.

To date, we have invested more than $5 million into funding cancer rehabilitation for people who could not otherwise afford it or were unable to work.

And while there is still more to do to ensure equitable access for all, we’ve continued to invest everything we have — at every stage — into expanding support for those who need it most.

What started small has grown into a trusted part of cancer care, helping people reclaim their lives after cancer.

If you’d like to be part of what comes next, we’d love to hear from you.

It is not about muscles and joints.
It’s about dignity.

It’s about whether someone can return to being a parent, a partner, a worker, a friend - or whether a child gets the chance to simply be a child again.

It’s about reclaiming the parts of life that matter most.

For too long, rehabilitation has been seen as optional. A “nice to have” once treatment ends.
But rehabilitation is the process of restoring a person’s ability to live their life.

It is the bridge between treatment… and truly living again.

Right now, at the Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation (PINC & STEEL) we’re seeing a shift.
More awareness.
More conversations.
And more partners stepping forward to back this work and help us reach more people.

We are also seeing unprecedented demand through medical referrals and need more support to meet that need.

👉 Help us make rehabilitation part of every recovery story.
