Odyssey Trust

Odyssey Trust We support tāngata whai ora (people seeking wellness) and whānau to live the lives they want, free from alcohol, drug, or other addiction challenges.

Head over to facebook.com/OdysseyYouthNZ to check in with our youth services team or to www.facebook.com/odysseycafenewlynn to visit our social enterprise Odyssey Cafe

Since 1980, Odyssey has supported thousands of New Zealanders whose lives are affected by alcohol, drug or other addiction challenges.

* * * We offer services for adults, young people and whāanau in a range of settings.

* * * We wholeheartedly believe that everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand should have the opportunity to live life to the fullest and feel hopeful about their future. We want you to have options to access the support you need in ways that work for you. We recognise that recovery is a journey and that you may need different supports at different times in your life.

* * * Wherever or whenever you may access our services – at our community hubs, staying with us, or somewhere else – you will find a supportive environment to learn new skills and work towards new life goals, alongside other people who are experiencing similar challenges.

* * * Guided and supported by trained peers and practitioners, you will have the time and space to think about what you want from life and how to get there.

* * * Here on Facebook, we'll share news about our work, as well as information and resources that support recovery and wellbeing. We look forward to connecting with you too.

* * * As in all our spaces, our conversations and work are guided by our pillars (or values) - Trust | Honesty | Responsibility | Concern | Love. We encourage everyone to consider these when sharing views here.

* * * This page is moderated from 9am to 4pm each weekday. Outside of these hours, if you need support or wish to get in touch, please visit our website, email or call us as detailed below. Thank you for dropping by.

This year we are proud to be celebrating 30 years of our Te Wairua service! On Thursday 25 September, we hosted a formal celebration to commemorate Te Wairua, Royal Oak.

Te Wairua opened in 1995 as the first of its kind: a service for people experiencing both addiction and mental health challenges. We now have three Te Wairua residences – two in Auckland and one in Northland.

As we reflect on this milestone, we tautoko all the kaimahi who have dedicated their efforts to supporting people in their recovery journeys over the years; we also acknowledge the hundreds of tāngata whai ora who have come through the doors of Te Wairua, making a better future for themselves, their whānau, and the wider community.

Kia ora e te whānau, our Hep C team is testing at the Kaikohe Memorial Hall this coming Friday 26 September. Ohonga Hauora (Awakening the Wellbeing) is an event coordindated by Te Putahi nui o Rehua.

Come down and see the team. Have a kōrero, learn how to keep yourself and whānau aware, and how we can support each other in this space of wellbeing. There'll be goodie bags, prizes, and gift cards for first time testers.

Nau mai, haere mai.

This week for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori we're affirming our commitment to uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our work, and encouraging and supporting the use of every day reo. While there's always work to do in this space, we're proud of our services which lean on and are guided by Te Ao Māori principles, and our teams which educate and guide us towards these aspirations.

Odyssey advocates for harm reduction. It's important to our work. With International Overdose Awareness Day upon us, it's a good time to reflect on the role of harm reduction in helping people make informed choices, and hopefully mitigate associated risks of substance use.

We navigate this within our services in various ways. We proudly collaborate with NZ Drug Foundation to deliver monthly drug checking clinics. This helps reduce the risks of accidental overdose as people know what is in the substances they are taking.

Our Haven service in Auckland's CBD supports people affected by mental distress, AOD challenges, and homelessness. To help minimise the risk of overdose we are able to provide brief interventions through educational materials and our peers onsite provide conversation with people about their recovery journeys.

On occasion we've also handed out drug checking kits containing nitazine and fentanyl test strips along with NZDF harm reduction information.

These are just a few ways that we are active in the harm reduction space, but we believe that taking action to encourage harm reduction can reduce the chances of overdose and ultimately improve people's wellbeing.

We're delighted to be offering a Hepatitis C service across the Te Manawa Taki region. The service begins on 1 October 2025.

The service is a partnership between Odyssey, DISC Trust, and Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora

Odyssey was chosen after a competitive procurement process. Te Whatu Ora liked Odyssey and DISC’s model, which emphasised community-led, culturally responsive care.

We will be running this alongside our Northland Hepatitis C mobile service.

Here are the before and after photos of a recent working bee at our New Windsor, Auckland site.

Odyssey’s grounds include 1.2ha of bush along a 238m stretch of Te Auaunga (Oakley Creek) – the longest waterway in Tāmaki Makaurau. Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has aspirations to enhance the mauri of Te Auaunga. As an organisation we want to uphold our kaitiaki responsibilities through restoring the hauora of the land, to support the wellbeing of all.

The enthusiastic work of about 40 tāngata whai ora and kaimahi helped clear areas once dominated by invasive weeds and people had fun doing it! The results were a fantastic example of what can be achieved in a short time by working together.

The mahi provided an awesome chance to connect with nature and connect with others while giving back to taiao/nature.

We hope the working bee is the first in a series where tāngata whai ora and kaimahi will work together, preparing the land for native planting.

Ngā mihi nui to all those involved and everyone who supported the event.

This year for International Nurses Day we’re shining a light on our wonderful Odyssey nurses. Our nurses are employed to work in our therapeutic communities – Te Wairua, adult service, and family centre. They provide an integral supportive role to tāngata whai ora during their recovery journey at Odyssey.

Thanks nurses!
