Celebrating 7 years of service and unity – Uluhinā Group Anniversary

Today, we gathered at Akiheuho to mark a special milestone: the 7th Anniversary of the Uluhina Elderly Group! It was a joyous occasion filled with laughter, reflection, and pride in all that we have achieved together over the years.

We were honoured to be joined by the vibrant Fatafata Mafana Group, adding warmth and fellowship to the celebration.

Certificates of recognition were presented to highlight the many successful projects Uluhina has been part of throughout the year, a true testament to the group’s commitment to the well-being and dignity of our elderly community here in Aotearoa.

Mālō ‘aupito to group leader Taani Lavulavu and the hardworking committee for organising such a beautiful event. Your dedication continues to uplift and strengthen our community.

A Day of friendship, music & awareness

Today marked a unique beginning of a heartfelt friendship between the 'Uluhinā and Fatafata Māfana elderly groups, who gathered at 'Akiheuho for their first Monday meet-up, a new weekly tradition to nurture fellowship, joy and support among our kau toulekeleka.

The program was beautifully led by Taani Lavulavu, leader of the 'Uluhinā group, who welcomed everyone with warm words, acknowledging this new chapter of unity between the two groups.

Adding to the day’s richness, we were honoured to have a representative from Epilepsy New Zealand share an important presentation. The presentation focused on raising awareness around epilepsy, equipping our elders with knowledge and confidence to help if someone experiences a seizure, whether at home, at work, or in the broader community.

The Fatafata Māfana group brought the vibes, treating everyone to uplifting songs performed by their talented singing band.

It was a joyful day filled with laughter, learning and the warmth of community. We look forward to many more Mondays of friendship and togetherness!

The Fono officially welcomed its new Mobile Dental Clinic today with a special blessing ceremony at its Manurewa clinic. The new facility will provide much-needed dental care to Pacific and wider communities, ensuring better access to essential oral health services.

Aotearoa Tongan Health Workers Association (ATHWA) CEO, Makahokovalu Pailate, attended the event, reaffirming ATHWA’s support for The Fono and other Pacific health and social providers working to improve community wellbeing.

“This initiative reflects the collective effort of Pacific health providers in ensuring our families receive the best healthcare possible,” said Pailate. “We are proud to stand alongside The Fono in making health services more accessible for our people.”

The Fono’s Mobile Dental Clinic will serve various communities across Auckland, focusing on improving oral health outcomes, particularly for those facing barriers to regular dental care. The blessing ceremony marked the beginning of this new chapter, with community leaders, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders coming together in celebration.

ATHWA continues to collaborate with health and social service providers to uplift Pacific families, supporting initiatives that enhance healthcare accessibility and community wellbeing.

Last Wednesday, our 'Uluhinā elderly group from 'Akiheuho proudly participated in the Vaka Tautua Kāinga Tonga Disability Network event at the Ōtara Community Centre.

Led by their dedicated leader, Mr. Taani Lavulavu, a group of 16 members engaged in this important community gathering.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our elders to connect, learn, and be part of an event that promotes inclusivity and support for our Tongan community.

Events like these strengthen relationships and ensure that our elders remain active and involved in meaningful activities.

Mālō ‘aupito to Vaka Tautua for organizing this, and to everyone who contributed to a great day of learning and engagement!
