South Seas clinical collaboration in Samoa.

This week, our South Seas Clinical Taskforce undertook a visit to Poutasi District Hospital, supporting the Long-Term Placements & Twinning Programme in partnership with Le Afio’aga o Aotearoa and the Ministry of Health Samoa, with MFATNZ support.

Led by Taskforce Chair Tagaloa Dr Andrew Chan Mow (SSH Clinical Director) and Dame Dr Teuila Percival, the visit validated clinical scope, supervision models and placement readiness, and identified practical system opportunities.

Acknowledgement to DG (CEO) June Scanlan Lui, DDG Public Health Samoa Tagaloa Dr Robert Thomsen, the MoH Samoa Nursing Directorate (Acting Chief Nurse and Nurse Consultants), and MFATNZ for their coordination and support. Thank you to the team at Poutasi Hospital for your time in hosting our SSH Clinical Taskforce.

Focused delivery. Strong collaboration.

South Seas Healthcare Trust proudly celebrates our Deputy Chair Dame Dr. Teuila Percival on her election as a Fellow of the Pacific Academy of Sciences.

A founding leader of South Seas 27 years ago in Ōtara, Dame Teuila has shaped Pacific-led, family-centred models of care that continue to transform child and community wellbeing across Aotearoa and Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa.

We also warmly congratulate all newly elected Fellows — your collective leadership in Pacific science, research, and innovation strengthens the resilience of our region.

Serving with both science and alofa, Dame Teuila’s legacy continues to inspire generations. We are incredibly proud.

Introducing our Bubblegum Youth led project called Aka moe Fe‘unu / Roots & Threads — a culturally grounded creative arts programme supporting Pasifika rangatahi to explore identity, strengthen cultural connection, and build resilience through tatau, visual arts, wearable arts, digital media and talanoa. We look forward to sharing more information as we countdown to our project launch.

Our team have been part of powerful two-day su***de prevention training, grounding this galueaga in care, cultural strength, and collective responsibility. When one branch is supported, the whole tree stands stronger.

Huge fa‘afetai to Le Va for supporting and backing Pasifika-led, community-driven solutions.
Now the work begins!

POPO Internship 2025/26 – Wrap Up

Our organisation celebrated our POPO interns who delivered their end-of-internship presentations. From day one to final presentations, our POPO interns have shown what it means to lead with heart, culture, and excellence.

Today marks our first day back for 2026, and as we’ve done for the past few years, we begin the year together — grounding ourselves in a small devotion and taking a moment to reflect, reconnect, and look ahead.

There’s something special about starting the year with intention, gratitude, and purpose. The energy in the room this morning was vibrant, hopeful, and full of momentum for what’s to come.

Here’s to a year ahead that is bold, connected, and driven by service to our communities. Let’s carry this spirit forward into everything we do in 2026.

Celebrating Our POPO Interns at South Seas
Every year, we’re proud to welcome University of Otago / MIT POPO Interns into South Seas — and each cohort leaves their own powerful imprint.

We first welcomed our 2025 POPO Intern cohort in November, and since then it’s been a non-stop exchange of learning, energy, fresh thinking, and connection. From community engagement to service insight, these interns have challenged us, inspired us, and reminded us why growing future Pasifika leaders matters.

As they step into their final week at South Seas Healthcare, we asked our interns to reflect on their journey - and share a glimpse of how it has been for them.

We are incredibly proud of each of you. Thank you for your energy, your commitment, and the heart you’ve brought into our spaces. The future is bright, and we’re honoured to have been part of your journey.
