Montgomery Spencer Memorial Oration - Dame Dr. Teuila Percival

It was a tremendous honour for our South Seas Team to stand alongside one of our South Seas founders and Deputy Chair of our Board, Dame Dr Teuila Percival, as she delivered the distinguished Montgomery Spencer Memorial Lecture at the 76th Annual Meeting of the Paediatric Society of New Zealand in Auckland yesterday.

This lecture is the only named paediatrics oration managed by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Aotearoa New Zealand — it honours the legacy of Dr Frederick Montgomery Spencer and recognises outstanding contributions to child health.

We were joined with our colleagues at Moana Connect , Le Afio’aga o Aotearoa and other partners to support Dame Teuila in this milestone moment — celebrating her service, voice, and vision for equity in Pacific and child health. Congratulations Dame Dr. Teuila Percival.

Measles is circulating in Aotearoa — and we all have a role to play in protecting our families and communities.

The current outbreak in New Zealand has placed our Pacific neighbours, including Samoa, on high alert. Over the past three weeks, Samoa has been mobilising health workers to boost childhood immunisations — a critical step to prevent a repeat of the 2019 measles tragedy that claimed the lives of more than 80 people, mostly children.

During that outbreak, South Seas Healthcare Trust stood alongside our Pacific communities as part of the national response effort — providing care, coordination, and support through one of the most challenging public health crises in recent memory. Today, our commitment remains the same: keeping our Pacific families safe, informed, and protected.

Dame Dr. Teuila Percival (South Seas Deputy Chair) and Tagaloa Dr. Andrew Chan Mow (South Seas Clinical Director) continue to raise awareness about protecting our children and families — and ensuring everyone travelling to the islands is immunised.

If you’re planning to travel to the Pacific Islands, including Samoa, make sure you’re fully vaccinated.
1. Two doses of the MMR vaccine protect around 99% of people from measles.
2. It’s free for anyone under 18 and for adults eligible for funded care.
3. Not sure if you’ve had both doses? South Seas can help you check your records and catch up quickly.

Measles doesn’t wait – so we’re stepping up!
The nationwide Measles Immunisation Week (3–7 Nov) is here — raising awareness and protecting our communities

Did you know? A single case of measles can infect 12–18 unvaccinated people — that’s how contagious it is!

If you haven’t had your MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella) vaccine, now’s the time. Born between 1969–2004? Check your records. We need 95% immunity across Aotearoa to stop outbreaks.

“Don’t delay” is the message. Let’s keep our little ones safe, our elders protected, and our community thriving.

If you’re a South Seas patient, get in touch with our clinic to book your appointment today.

Malo Aupito, Fa’afetai lava to Dr. Gerhard Sundborn and the Department of Pacific Health (School of Population Health, University of Auckland)!
What an absolute privilege to host and connect with your incredible student group at South Seas. Sharing our Pacific-led journey and seeing their passion in action reminds us why we do what we do — to uplift, inspire, and create pathways for the next generation of changemakers. Earlier this week, our team was blown away watching the students present their learnings with confidence, heart, and purpose. Malo lava for bringing your whole selves to the experience!

Wrapping up Fijian Language Week in style!

We closed out the working week with our South Seas bi-annual Team Huddle — a special time for our whole organisation to come together, reflect, and recharge.

This week, we infused the theme of “Na noqu vosa me na tekivu mai vale – My language starts at home” into our huddle. It included the beauty of the Fijian language in our opening prayer, lunch, quiz categories and team activities. Our staff embraced “Fijian Blue” as our theme — a symbol of unity, pride, and connection.

It was the perfect opportunity to reset, reconnect, and recharge as a team, while celebrating the beauty of vosa vakaViti.

Macawa ni Vosa vakaViti – Fijian Language Week!

At South Seas Healthcare, we celebrate the power of language to carry identity, wisdom, and culture. For our team member Shartika Lata, the Fijian language is a living connection to her roots, traditions, and ancestors — keeping heritage alive for future generations.

Let’s honour and share the beauty of vosa vakaViti together.

Macawa ni Vosa vakaViti – Fijian Language Week 2025

This year’s theme is: “Na noqu vosa me na tekivu mai vale – My language starts at home.”

For our IT & Infrastructure Manager Shynel Prasad, Fijian Language Week is about staying connected to his roots, creating a little Fijian village here in Aotearoa, and keeping traditions and belonging alive.

At South Seas, we celebrate and honour these stories — because language is more than words, its identity, family, and culture.
