.studio Inger-Lisa moving into parsvakonasana, with Moni explaining subtleties in the foundation and direction of the pose.
Like all standing poses, given full study, Parsvak' gives so much up to the student. It is intense, but can become gentle; it can feel heavy but can switch to lightness. A full extension from finger tip to little toe. πŸ™

Parsvottanasana is a foundation pose, it is a teacher and gives up so much knowledge to you and your practice:
Connection to the mat through your feet, leg extension - up to the hips and down to the feet; the lift of the sternum and chest; spine extension and the equal balance of the sides of the trunk as the body lowers over the front thigh. And of course - all with the breath and concentration in every part of you. πŸ™

Geeta Iyengar on backbends in her book. Yoga - A Gem For Women.

β€œβ€¦ Asanas in this section stretch the spinal column in a concave movement and are very important, as the anterior spine extends in backbends making the blood circulate more freely. The opening of the chest in these particular postures energizes the lungs and breathing becomes deep with the result that oxygenated blood circulates all over the body”.

For Guru Purnima at IYC we recognise and pay respect to BKS Iyengar as our foremost teacher and guide in our yoga journey. (Not forgetting Geeta Iyengar, Prashant Iyengar, Abhijata and the wider RIMYI family in Pune).

Monica had a long relationship of study and practice with Mr Iyengar in Pune and welcomed him here in Aotearoa NZ when he visited in 1992.

These teachings flow through to us at IYC and we are very grateful.

Supported Adho Mukha Svanasana is a wonderful start to any practice. The top of the thighs are held in the ropes, the arms and hands bear no weight; and the whole trunk and spine lengthens. πŸ™ IYC
