Meet Issy 👋

For the past 6 years, Issy has been an integral part of The Mobile Physio team - working as our Senior Physiotherapist, Clinical Manager, Pilates instructor, and now the face behind our social media pages 📱✨

Passionate about health, fitness, and helping people get back to doing what they love, Issy thrives on uncovering the root cause of an injury and guiding her clients toward their goals. Her own background in ballet and contemporary dance sparked her journey into physiotherapy, after years of rehabilitation herself.

A real people person with a strong focus on professional development, Issy brings energy, knowledge, and genuine care to every client she works with ❤️

And when she’s not at work? She’s busy being mum to 8-month-old Mackenzie 🍼

Balance is something we often take for granted… until it starts to affect confidence, walking, or everyday activities. 👣

As we age, changes in strength, vision, reaction time and joint stability can increase the risk of falls — and falls are one of the leading causes of injury and loss of independence in older adults.

The good news? Simple balance exercises performed regularly can make a big difference. 💪

Here are 3 easy balance exercises you can try at home:
▫️ Calf raises on a step
Hold onto a rail or bench for support and slowly rise onto your toes before lowering back down. This is great for ankle strength and stability.

▫️ Single leg balance
Stand tall holding a stable surface and lift one foot slightly off the ground. Start with just a few seconds and build up gradually.

▫️ Heel-to-toe (tandem) walking
Walk in a straight line placing one foot directly in front of the other, heel touching toe. Use a hallway wall or bench nearby for support if needed.

✅ Safety tips by age & ability:
• Younger adults: these can usually be performed independently with good control.
• Older adults or anyone with reduced balance: always perform near a sturdy support surface (kitchen bench, rail, wall) and have someone nearby if needed.
• If you feel dizzy, unsteady, or have a history of falls — seek advice from a physiotherapist before starting.

Improving balance helps reduce falls risk, improve confidence, and keep you moving safely and independently for longer. 🙌

If balance has become more challenging for you or a loved one, we’re here to help.

Healing isn’t one-size-fits-all ⏳

One of the most common frustrations we hear:
“Why is this taking so long?”

The truth is—different tissues heal at very different speeds, and your rehab needs to respect that:

Muscles
Muscles have a great blood supply, which helps them heal relatively quickly. With the right loading and rehab, you can often regain strength and function sooner than you expect.

Ligaments
Ligaments connect bone to bone and provide stability. Because they have a poorer blood supply, they take longer to heal—and need progressive, controlled stress to regain strength.

Tendons
Tendons attach muscle to bone and don’t love being rushed. They adapt slowly, and while pain might settle early, true healing and strength take time and consistency.

Important reminder:
Just because pain has decreased doesn’t mean the tissue is fully healed. This is where many people reinjure themselves—by doing too much, too soon.

✅ What helps?
• Gradual, structured loading
• Consistency over intensity
• Listening to your body (not just your pain)
• Guidance from a physio when needed
Healing is not linear—there will be ups and downs—but respecting the process gives you the best chance of a full recovery 💪

Imaging isn’t always the first step… and that’s with good reason 👇

When do we use imaging?
When your symptoms aren’t improving as expected, there’s a history of trauma, or we need to rule out something more serious.

Why not scan straight away?
Because things like X-rays and MRIs often show “changes” that are completely normal (yes - even pain-free people have them!). Scanning too early can sometimes create more confusion than clarity.

How do we decide?
It comes down to your story, your symptoms, and a thorough assessment. Imaging is just one piece of the puzzle, not the whole picture.

The goal? The right care at the right time without unnecessary tests.

Some really exciting news for us here this week! We are teaming up with Parkinson’s New Zealand to bring exercise classes into our communities. Parkinson’s affects 12,000 kiwis a year and is currently the fastest growing neurological disorder in New Zealand. Strengthening and balance exercises have been proven to decrease falls risk and increase quality of life amongst those living with the condition. I love and believe in this organisation - their team are so dedicated to helping clients live their best life despite the struggles of Parkinson’s. If you know anyone who would benefit from this class, be sure to let them know. Starting on the North Shore, these classes will soon expand to the Hibiscus Coast and then surrounding areas of Auckland.
They will be led by our wonderful Sunny who has a huge heart and passion for this group! 🌟

We are soo proud of our very own Elise, who headed to Spain to represent New Zealand in the under 25 international Ultimate Frisbee competition. We are already missing her but know she’s going to hit it out of the park. I love seeing our staff members achieve their goals both at work and personally. Elise has already changed so many clients lives and it’s a pleasure to work alongside amazing people. We are here cheering you on Elise!! 🌟🌟🌟
