We all know the New Zealand sun is tough on our skin, but it can be just as harsh on our eyes.

Too much UV exposure can leave you with sore, red eyes (like sunburn, but on the eye), and over time it increases the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration and even “surfer’s eye” — something we see a lot of here in NZ.

The fix is simple:
・ Good quality sunglasses (look for 100% UV protection)
・ A hat for extra shade
・ And don’t forget the kids - their eyes are even more sensitive than ours.

A few easy steps now can save your sight later.

Choosing glasses isn’t just about what fits, it’s about what feels right. Here are a few quick tips to help you find a frame that flatters your features.

Face shape:
Round face? Try angular or rectangular frames for contrast.
Square face? Softer, rounder frames can balance things out.
Oval face? Lucky you - most shapes will suit.

Complexion + colouring:
Warm undertones? Look for earthy tones like tortoiseshell, olive, gold or warm neutrals.
Cool undertones? Black, navy, silver or icy tones will work beautifully.
Bold colouring? Go all in with a pop of colour or a strong silhouette.

Still unsure? That’s what we’re here for. Come in and let us help you find the perfect frame that fits your face, your tone, and your style.

If your eyes often feel dry, gritty or irritated, it could be Dry Eye Syndrome, sometimes caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

The tiny glands in your eyelids are meant to release oils that stop your tears from evaporating too quickly. When they get blocked, your eyes can feel sore, tired and even watery. A simple place to start is with a warm compress over your eyes to help loosen those blocked glands. Eye drops and small lifestyle tweaks can also help.

We stock a full range of options to treat your dry eyes - pop in-store and our team can recommend treatment that’s right for you.

MEET THE TEAM | Optometrist Wendy Hill's passion for eye care started early.

After being fitted with her first pair of glasses at just 9 years old, and later watching her younger sister’s sight saved through timely treatment of a rare eye condition, Wendy knew she wanted to dedicate her career to helping others protect and improve their vision. By 14, contact lenses had changed her life — and today, she still finds immense joy in seeing how much of a difference they can make for her patients.

Wendy graduated with a Bachelor of Optometry in South Africa before moving to Auckland in 1998, where she has built a highly respected career. She later completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Science at the University of Auckland, specialising in Ocular Therapeutics.

Her clinical expertise includes glaucoma management, myopia control and dry eye treatment. As a Board-Certified Glaucoma Prescriber, she works closely with leading specialists such as Professor Helen Danesh-Meyer and has been deeply involved in professional education and governance across New Zealand and Australia.

For Wendy, joining the Mortimer Hirst team is the perfect way to continue growing as a clinician while sharing her passion for eyecare with patients and future optometrists alike.

We’re proud to have Wendy as part of our team

Myopia (or short-sightedness) means children see clearly up close but struggle with things in the distance — like the classroom board or the TV across the room.

You might notice them squinting, sitting too close to screens, or complaining of headaches. It’s common for myopia to develop as kids grow, but regular eye checks and the right lenses can help slow it down.
