What can you do to prepare for IVF treatment?

We asked Repromed Fertility Nurse, Juliet Davies for her top tips for preparing for IVF. She says:

“It’s important to know that when you have been referred for fertility treatment, the cause of your reduced fertility is often out of your control. But there are some things you can focus on to help you prepare for IVF, including:

✔️Follow a Mediterranean-style diet packed with colourful fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats
✔️Stay hydrated by drinking at least 1 litre of water a day
✔️Engage in gentle, enjoyable activities such as walking, yoga, or pilates
✔️Supplement with folate or folic acid and iodine for at least three months prior to conceiving
✔️Quit smoking and va**ng and avoid drugs and alcohol”

He rangi nui mō te reo - a moment to celebrate our language!

This year, Te Wiki o te Reo Māori marks 50 years of celebrating and revitalising te reo Māori, from the original Māori Language Day in 1972 to the full week we honour today

Here at Repromed, we believe te reo is a true taonga, a treasure that connects us with our culture, our identity, and our whānau.

In the clinic this week, we’ll be taking part in a variety of daily activities, including quizzes, treasure hunts and other interactive sessions.

Give it a go- kia kaha te reo Māori!

Myth or truth? Do lifestyle factors such as smoking, va**ng and alcohol affect both eggs and s***m?

Truth.
Lifestyle choices such as smoking and alcohol do impact fertility for both eggs and s***m. Smoking is linked to reduced egg numbers, poorer s***m quality, and a lower chance of pregnancy. Va**ng E-cigarettes, even ni****ne free ones, are harmful to fertility by disrupting the hormones and function of both male and female reproductive systems. Alcohol can also affect hormone balance and the health of both eggs and s***m.
Making small changes, like cutting back or stopping smoking/va**ng and limiting alcohol, can help improve your chances of conceiving and support the health of any future pregnancy.

We ask the experts: What is your key tip for preparing for IVF?

"Focus on what you can control, such as looking after your overall health. Simple steps like eating a balanced diet, staying active, and finding ways to relax can make a difference to your wellbeing and help improve your chances of getting pregnant”.

-Dr Emily Liu, Repromed fertility doctor

Fertility treatment is a deeply personal journey, but for many Māori and Pasifika, seeking help can carry extra layers of complex emotions.

These feelings, along with other barriers, mean Māori and Pasifika are under-represented among those who access fertility like IVF. Our Executive Director, Dr Guy Gudex, shared his perspective in this Radio NZ article about the unique infertility stigma faced by Maori and Pasifika.

Read the article here: 👉 https://www.rnz.co.nz/life/relationships/family/highly-fertile-the-unique-infertility-stigma-faced-by-maori-and-pasifika

Māori and Pasifika are often perceived by themselves and others as highly fertile. It is a stigma that brushes over infertility rates that match or exceed those of the general population.
