🦖🎲 HUNGRY DINOSAURS 🎲🦖

Our dinos were starving today — and they made the perfect therapy helpers in clinic!

This game is brilliant for working on because every ball 😂👌🏻 is a chance to practise:
✨ Target sounds/words/phrase
✨ Repeating target words before feeding a piece
✨ Using fun carrier phrases like “Dino wants ___” or “Chomp the ___”
✨ Building short sentences as we play

The best part? Kids don’t even realise how much practice they’re getting because they’re too busy laughing at the noisy, hungry dinos. It’s a fun, motivating way to keep repetitions high while keeping engagement even higher.

Games like this remind us that therapy doesn’t have to be “work” — it can be play with purpose. 💬🦖

🟥🟧🟨 RUBIK’S RACE 🟩🟦🟪

Rubik’s Race is such a hit in our sessions! It’s fast-paced, colourful, and packed with opportunities for language and communication practice.

Here’s how we adapt and use it:

✨ Speech sound practice – before each shake or move, children practise their target sound or word. The repetition builds in naturally.
✨ Language skills – we work on concepts like colours, shapes, position words (“next to, above, below”), and sequencing (“first move this one, then slide that one”).
✨ Turn-taking and social communication – waiting for a turn, using encouraging words, and learning to be a good winner (and loser!).
✨ Problem-solving and flexible thinking – children explain their strategy, describe moves, and adapt when things don’t go to plan.

The best part? Kids are so focused on “beating the shake” that they don’t even realise how much speech and language practice they’re getting in. 💡

Sometimes the best therapy happens when it just feels like play.

🦖OUR OLD MATE TREX 🦖

Our farting dinosaur has officially become a clinic legend 🦖💨

He’s been around a while now and honestly, it’s still a massive favourite. The kids never get tired of feeding it, waiting for the surprise noises, and laughing their heads off when it farts or poops things out.

But here’s the best part: it’s not just silly fun. We use it all the time in our and speech sessions. A few things we do include:

✨ Taking turns (“My turn to feed, your turn to wait!”)
✨ Building vocabulary (“eat, chew, swallow, fart, poop”)
✨ Expanding sentences (“The dinosaur is eating the ball.”)
✨ Working on while we play

It’s one of those magical toys that blends therapy goals with so much laughter that the kids don’t even realise how much they’re practising. Honestly, I think it might be one of the best investments we’ve made for both and learning.

Do you have a toy like this in your house or clinic that’s stood the test of time?

⭐️ REPRESENTATION MATTERS – EVEN IN LEGO! ⭐️

I recently came across a couple of Lego sets where the figurines wear and burst with pride and excitement. 💛

As a (and mum), I know how powerful it can be for children to see themselves represented in the toys, books, and media around them. When a child spots a Lego character wearing a cochlear implant, it’s not “just a toy”, it’s a reflection that their world belongs in play too.

🌟 Why this matters:
• It normalises hearing technology for children and their peers.
• It encourages positive identity and self-confidence.
• It opens up natural conversations about differences in a way that feels safe and fun.
• It reminds us that doesn’t have to be complicated, it can start in the toy box.

Play is how children learn, explore, and build their sense of belonging. Seeing a Lego person who looks like them (whether that’s through skin colour, glasses, wheelchairs, or cochlear implants) sends a powerful message: “I belong here, too.”

Sometimes the smallest bricks can help build the strongest foundations. 🧱💙

A big welcome to our newest .richards 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 She’s been with us for just over a week and she’s found her rhythm so easily! And as usual, here are 🔟 fun facts about Tiegan:

☘️ My party tricky is pulling out my Irish Dance moves at any given opportunity - no music necessary!
🟡 As a child, I was obsessed with Pokemon cards and still collect them now.
🏰 One of my goals in life is to visit every Disney theme park in the world. I am making steady progress having ticked off Paris and Florida!
🎶 This year I went to Glastonbury musical festival and bumped into Harry Styles in the crowd (childhood me is still screaming!).
🏁 I like to go on car rally’s in pre-war cars, recently completing one around Scotland in a 1910 Bianchi!
🍞 I’m a bit of a sourdough enthusiast and love trying to bake loaves with varying levels of success.
🏃🏼‍♀️Saturday mornings mean Parkrun! I have just completed my 51st Parkrun at my 17th location.
🔫 In college, I worked at a Laser quest and now enjoy humiliating my friends every now then when I whip out my old skills.
⛳️ I really enjoy a game of mini golf and have never lost a game ever (no need to fact check!).
🇬🇧 I grew up in England, but my Mum is Scottish and my Dad is Welsh. You could say I represent the entire UK quite well.

🎉 NZSTA AWARENESS WEEK 🎉

As NZSTA Awareness Week comes to an end, we celebrate the vital role Speech-Language Therapists play in supporting communication across Aotearoa.

As paediatric Speech-Language Therapists, we work with our clients to help find their words, whether this be through supporting speech, language, literacy, fluency, or social communication. In private therapy,

Here’s to our SLT team - we appreciate you 🙌💛

⭐️ WELCOME TO OUR OT STUDENT ⭐️

With this week being week it’s fitting to celebrate and introduce to you our student Ashley who’s joined us from virtually across the other side of the world 🌍 for eight weeks 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Here’s a little bit about her:

🏒 Proud Canadian who’d rather be on the ice than watching from the stands — playing hockey is one of my favourite ways to blow off steam.
🏕️ Hiking boots and a tent? Say less. I’m happiest out in nature with a campfire and fresh air.
🎲 Board games are my jam — I’m always up for a game night (yes, even the complicated rule ones).
🗣️ I speak a bit of French and Spanish — enough to get by and charm a waiter or two.
☕ No coffee for me, thanks — but hand me a chai or London Fog and I’m in heaven.
🤹‍♀️ Fun party trick: I can juggle with my hands and keep a soccer ball up with my knees and feet — both kinds of juggling count, right?
💇‍♀️ I’ve donated my hair three times so far — and it’s probably time for round four!
🐶 Dreaming of the day I can adopt a little Jack Russell — full of sass, smarts, and zoomies.
📺 Not much of a TV buff, but I am currently deep in a binge of The Crown.
🚪 In the past six months, I’ve been inside six different prisons — all part of my last occupational therapy placement!
