🎯 BALL ON THE LINE CHALLENGE 🔵

In session our work on pushing, rolling and bouncing a ball/bean bag/toy along our taped lines on our chalkboard wall ✨ It’s harder than it looks!

By asking children to keep the ball on the line as they move it across, we’re targeting:

✨ –eyecoordination

✨ Shoulder and wrist stability
✨ Graded force control (not too hard, not too soft!)

You can change the challenge level by:

🔹 Using different sized balls
🔹 Rolling vs bouncing
🔹 Making the line straight, curved or zig-zag
🔹 Timing it for an extra focus boost
🔹 Adding a “stop and hold” at certain points

It’s a fantastic way to build foundational skills needed for handwriting, ball skills, and everyday functional tasks all while feeling like play.

Simple set-up. Big skill-building. 🙌

⭐️ SLT MILESTONES WE’RE KEEPING AN EXTRA EYE ON IN 2026 ⭐️

📋 Not as a checklist.
🐎 Not as a race.
✨But as gentle guideposts.

As therapists (& parents), we’re not looking for perfection. We’re watching for patterns, progress & connection.

Here are a few things we keep an eye on:

💭 Understanding before talking
Does your child respond to their name, follow simple instructions, and show they understand what’s being said?

☝🏻Intent to communicate
Pointing, showing, reaching, eye contact, gestures. Communication starts long before words.

👯 , not just vocabulary
Shared attention, turn-taking, copying sounds or actions matter more than how many words are spoken.

🧸 Play skills
Play tells us so much about language, and social development.

😖 Frustration levels
Big feelings can sometimes be a sign that communication is hard, not that behaviour is “bad”.

aren’t deadlines.
And development isn’t linear.

Some children move in bursts.
Some take the scenic route.

If you’re unsure whether to wait or seek support, that question alone is worth a conversation 🤍

💦🧊 WATER PLAY 💦🧊

Its warm outside, so what better than water play! We froze , and used warm water to melt the blocks. Cue lots of , curiosity, and learning along the way.

As the ice melted, we explored basic concepts, such as;
🔴 colours
✨ same vs different
💧 wet vs dry
🔥 warm vs cold
⬇️ in vs out
📏 big vs little

The animals in the water gave us plenty to talk about too — naming, , predicting who will come out next?!

fun was built right in with syringes to squeeze, sq**rt, and spray 💪 supporting hand strength, coordination, and control (while feeling like pure play)!

Messy? Yes.
Engaging? Absolutely.
Learning? Everywhere.

🌟 LEARN TOGETHER, GROW TOGETHER 🌟

In our groups, children come together in a small, supportive setting to build essential reading and writing skills.

These groups focus on:
📚 Phonics & Spelling: learning the sounds letters make and how to blend them into words.
✏️ Decoding & Encoding: reading words confidently and spelling them accurately.
🧩 Comprehension & Language Skills: understanding what they read and using to express ideas.
🤝 Social & Collaborative Learning: working with peers, sharing ideas, and taking turns.

Literacy groups are about , , and . Children benefit from guided, structured activities while also having fun and feeling successful. 🙌

☀️ SUMMER HOLIDAY RECAP ☀️

Last but certainly not least here is what our got up to this summer before joining the team:

I moved from the Tron, aka Hamilton back to Auckland, went to one of my best friend’s wedding’s in Wellington as a bridesmaid. I enjoyed the sights of Welly, and then came back for Christmas with my Danish 🇩🇰 family and kiwi 🥝 family, and then went to Waihi for New Years, whilst moving into my new apartment on the North Shore early Jan and getting used to calling myself a Jaffa 🍊 again 😊 and visiting all the beaches, then did a quick get away to the Coromandel to top it off. 😀
