On the sideline, confidence is not built by reputation alone. It is built through rehearsal.

A recent sideline trauma course run by New Zealand Rugby and attended by some of our Axis team, highlighted a simple but important reminder: clinical skills can fade if they are not actively maintained.

In clinic, experience and reputation help build confidence. On the sideline, serious incidents may only happen a few times each season, which means preparation cannot be left to chance.

The difference between knowing what to do and being able to act calmly under pressure often comes down to:

- Practicing key scenarios regularly, so responses feel familiar when pressure is high.
- Clear structure and defined roles.
- Strong communication.
- Rehearsing in the actual sideline environment, with the equipment, space and team members you will rely on.

Without regular rehearsal, timing can drift, communication can become less precise and simple actions can lose efficiency.

Our full article explores what effective sideline preparation involves, and the simple steps that can make a real difference when pressure is high.

Are you genuinely prepared?

Supporting women through pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal recovery is a big part of what we do. That includes helping new mums safely return to sport and exercise, building a plan that looks after the pelvic floor and enhance recovery, so they can get back to doing what you love with confidence.

And guess what! Men are just as affected as women.

The pelvis is central to a lot of other issues that often go unrecognised. When something's off, it can show up as:

- Lower back, hip, gluteal, groin, or coccyx pain that won't go away.
- Bladder or bowel issues.
- Sexual dysfunction.
- Menstrual pain and endometriosis.
- Post-prostate surgery recovery.
- Erectile dysfunction.

Which are all things our pelvic health physiotherapists treat regularly.

If any of this sounds like someone you are working with, it might be worth pointing them our way. Our team works alongside GPs, specialist, or existing physiotherapist, so referring a patient to us adds to what's already happening, doesn't replace it.

Not all groin pain in footballers is soft tissue related.

In our latest Radiology Review, this case involved a left inferior p***c ramus stress fracture in a professional football player with gradually worsening groin pain. This became more noticeable with higher intensity running and kicking before affecting training load.

An AP pelvic x-ray showed the fracture line, with MRI confirming the injury and surrounding bone stress reaction.

Although p***c ramus stress fractures are generally considered low risk, they still require careful management. Recovery often takes 3 to 4 months and should include:

- Review of continuing factors such as load, recovery biomechanics, bone health and REDs.
- A graded return to running and kicking.
- Alternative conditioning during early rehabilitation.
- Targeted input for pelvic and groin function.

In this case, a collaborative approach between the medical team and a specialist pelvic physiotherapist helped guide recovery and return-to-play.

Concussion care should start before the season begins.

Baseline concussion testing means having a clearer understanding of each player's normal brain function, helping guide safer return-to-play decisions for your young athletes.

In our latest Blog, Dr Mark Fulcher explains why this matters, what the NRL approach looks like, and how the same principles can support players at school and club level.

How Diagnosis Can Influence ACC Entitlement

Not every ongoing knee, shoulder or back problem that starts under ACC is still an ACC-covered injury by the time a specialist assessment happens.

In our latest article, Dr Mark Fulcher explains why some referrals that begin as a sprain or strain, can later turn out to reflect a different underlying condition, such as osteoarthritis or other degenerative change.

This article looks at:

- Why ACC entitlement needs to be reviewed against the current diagnosis

- Why persistent symptoms may mean the original injury code no longer fits

- How clear referral information helps reduce confusion for patients

- What referrers can include to support the right care pathway from the outset

This is a practical read for GPs and referrers working with injury claims, diagnostic uncertainty, and ongoing musculoskeletal symptoms
