Last year, Coast Physio's Danielle Quigley came within one game of qualifying for the Paris Olympics in Beach Volleyball!

After winning stages 1 and 2 of the Continental Cup qualifications, our NZ Women's beach team headed into an intense training programme for stage 3. Every weekend from March to June, Danielle would travel to Tauranga at 5am Saturday for squad training, returning home Sunday evening, then fitting in six more training sessions through the week while working full time.

In June, the team flew to the USA for a month-long training camp in Hermosa Beach, training alongside Olympic gold and silver medallists. From there, they headed to China for the Cup.

From Danielle:
"We won our first round games in convincing style which gave us huge confidence to go up against the power house of China IN China! As a squad, we won one game and lost the other, so it went to a Golden match where you can pick any two of your four players to put forward against the other country.

We lost this match in the closest three-setter you can imagine, sending the final set to 15! We were absolutely GUTTED because this is by far the closest New Zealand have ever come to qualifying for the Olympics in Beach Volleyball. ONE game away from playing under the Eiffel Tower."

Danielle credits Geneva Healthcare's support for making it possible to pursue this dream whilst working full time and raising her 5-year-old. We're incredibly proud of what she achieved!

Good afternoon Coasties! We are itching to get back in the clinic and see you all!
Todays Topic is GARDENING; We thought good timing considering all our staff are in spring cleaning mode.
The more common injuries we see when it comes to gardening (and being outdoors more) are upper limb and back sprains/pains.
We commonly see elbow overuse injuries caused by sudden increases in lifting heavy or from deciding to spend all day painting that fence you’ve been meaning to do.
Back injuries and sprains from lifting from one side or twisting,
Wrist and shoulder niggles from lifting or overhead work

SOME TIPS!
First things first; As funny as you may look, if your body isn’t ready for movement it is easier to get injured, especially if it has been a while since you were last doing said activity. It is helpful to warm up! Just like an athlete. :)

Bend the knees: although there is nothing wrong with using your back, heavier loads can cause uncontrolled back movement and stress it; bending the knees and hips while trying to keep the back straighter will help take the load off the back.

Don’t overfill/overdo it! If you haven’t been lifting daily, your body will need to adjust over time so it is a good idea to start with a comfortable weight and not push yourself too soon (same rule applies to painting and repetitive loads).

Keep the weight close to your body: If you want to break a branch you jump out on the end of it right? Keeping the extra weight close to your center of mass means less strain along the “branch”

Smarter not harder: benches or chairs where you can put watering cans/buckets/pot plants so you don’t need to lift from the ground or bend over to work on things is smarter :)

ps: we have many staff members with horse and donkey p**p for your garden; its the new "side hussle"

Good Morning Coast!
We hope you have all managed to get out for a level 3 coffee!
Today’s topic is for those still working from home or if you spend a lot of time in the office.
Sitting postures!
Everyone knows “don’t slouch” “sit up straight” but what is good posture?
Briefly, to me, good posture is one that doesn’t last more than 30 minutes.
But if we have to sit, how do we sit “well”?
Firstly there are plenty of helpful google images on “ergonomic positioning” to get you started but also play with the following ideas.

-The seat can tilt down so that hips are slightly higher than knees and to encourage lower back extension (rather than tucking under and rounding our back).
-Lumbar support can help prevent slumping forward which flows up to our head posture; it can help us from sticking our chins out and having our heads too far forwards.
-Screen at eyelevel and mouse at elbow height where you don’t have to reach for it.
- Did you know that the average head weighs 5 kg; no problem with normal posture, But sticking your head out/forward for phone or laptop, the load on your neck / back muscles is 20kg+
-If using a laptop, it is probably better to have an external keyboard so we can have the screen at a good height.

Try and take regular breaks, change positions all the time, getting up to boil the kettle or make a tea or even set an alarm on your phone to move; are all good ways to encourage changing position.

Hello Coasties

We at Coast Physio will be posting some health tips over the next few weeks. There is a great link below if you would like to look at the evidence on Standing. It’s not just about heart attacks; it’s our brains, bones, circulation and metabolism.

· Did you know that the daily average time people are sedentary is 12hrs!

· If you can regularly get up and down during the day, this can be more beneficial to your health than sitting all day then going for a run or doing exercise after work.

· There is strong evidence that being physically active decreases risks of certain cancers.

· You can double your risk of cardiovascular disease by sitting 8 hrs a day.

· Our bones need stimulation- low grade exercise such as walking and standing can give our bones what they need to keep strong and reduce osteoporosis: we use it or lose it!

· Regularly change your position, sitting 30 mins max.

· Sitting posture is still important for pain and maintaining bone, muscle and joint health: We can help you with ergonomic positioning and our next public service announcement is covering this topic.

· Obviously we are not designed to sit all day, This is why we, as physios see so much posture related pain! Even sitting in a great posture is bad if we are stuck in it all day! https://www.juststand.org/the-facts/
