Here’s our latest feature in this month’s Kumeu Courier 🤓

This ultra-wide field retinal scan, captured using our Optomap scanner, shows a retinal detachment - this is a serious eye emergency that can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated.

Thankfully, we were able to refer our patient for urgent surgery, and her vision is now on the mend.

Optomap scans are included in both our standard and comprehensive eye exams, helping us detect issues early - often before symptoms appear.

Are your eyes healthy? For Eyes Optometrists

We continue our series on finding eye health problems with the sophisticated equipment at For Eyes. Last month we shared an image of a retinal tear/hole, recorded with our ultra-wide field retinal Optomap scanner which can literally see around the iris to image the peripheral retina.

This month’s image is a retinal detachment. If a retinal tear is not treated, then fluid can seep under the retina causing it to peel off the inside of the eye like loose wallpaper on a wall.

A detachment is much easier to see than a small retinal tear or hole that starts it. In this image you can clearly see the hole and the delicate retina ballooning around it. This patient was referred urgently to Greenlane Hospital. Surgery to remove the vitreous gel to prevent it pulling on the retina was combined with the placement of a gas bubble inside the eye to gently lift the retina back into place. Then laser treatment was used to form small, targeted scars around the hole and peripheral loose areas, to prevent the retina from detaching again.

Symptoms of retinal detachment are a loss of vision, or a constant dark patch in your vision. Flashing lights and floaters can precede a detachment.

It’s Myopia Awareness week!

This year’s theme ‘Screens Down, Eyes Up’ is a timely reminder to give our eyes a much needed break. With screen time at an all time high, especially among kids, myopia (also known as short sightedness) is becoming more common and showing up earlier than ever.

Here are some tips to help protect your child’s vision:
✅ Encourage outdoor play and natural light exposure
✅ Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds
✅ Limit unnecessary screen time, especially for young children
✅ Book regular eye examinations

A few small changes now can go a long way in looking after your child’s eyesight. Call us now on 09 412 8172 or click the link below to book an appointment online:

Last weekend the team at For Eyes had a fantastic visit to the studio of Dean Buchanan, the talented artist behind the new painting hanging in our practice. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet him in person, hear about his creative process, and see where the artwork came to life. We loved getting a behind-the-scenes look at his studio and hearing his fascinating life stories.

The painting in our practice has already caught the eye of many of our patients, with several recognising it instantly as one of Dean’s distinctive works. We believe it’s a perfect fit for our space, beautifully complementing our colourful eyewear collection.

Have a look at Dean’s website below to see some of his recent paintings and stained-glass pieces:
