The Auckland Mataatua Society, also known as Mataatua Marae, was established on the 15th of May 1975. The establishment of this Society was the idea of the descendants of Ngāti Awa who lived in Tāmaki Makaurau and who saw the need to unite the descendents of Ngāti Awa who travelled from the Bay of Plenty to Auckland. The Society acquired it's land at 17 Killington Crescent Māngere in 1978 and in 1

979 Mataatua Marae opened its doors to the descendents of Ngāti Awa ki Tāmaki Makaurau. David Lange, Minister of Parliament for Māngere at the time opened the Marae at the pōwhiri. The vision of the Auckland Mataatua Society is to be a fully functional marae offering educational, health and housing initiatives not only to Māori but to the many nationalities that utilise the marae. The marae is built on the foundations of tikanga Māori embedded in the principles of manaaki (respect) aroha (love), whakapono( faith) and tūmanako (charity). Current Executive Committee 2020-2021
