Gig Buddies Auckland

Gig Buddies Auckland But for many people living with disability, going to a gig, watching live sport, or just meeting up with friends comes with additional challenges to overcome.

Gig Buddies Auckland is an initiative of Spectrum Care, a registered Not For Profit organization that supports people with disabilities to live independent and fulfilling lives.

Going to live events is something many of us take for granted. Things like social isolation, inaccessibility of venues and transport, and lack of evening and late-night support options. Gig Buddies, funded by Spectrum Foundation and other supporting organizations, promotes greater social inclusion by matching people with disabilities with volunteers who share the same interests and passions. They attend live events together, giving people with disabilities and volunteers the opportunity to connect with new people, experience new things, and make new friends. In this way, Gig Buddies enables people with disabilities across the city to participate in after-dark activities, building lasting friendships with like-minded volunteers in the process.

Last weekend, our Gig Buddies crew stepped out of their comfort zones at Dead Witch and into the world of alternative rock and metal—and it was incredible to see everyone embracing something new. From heavy riffs to powerful vocals, the energy was unreal, and our buddies were right in the middle of it all, discovering genres they don’t usually listen to and loving every minute.

A huge shoutout to the amazing local bands Living State Letra Luna If It Bleeds - NZ who took the stage—you absolutely smashed it! Supporting local music is what it’s all about, and we’re so proud to be part of a community that celebrates inclusion, creativity, and live music.

Here’s to more gigs, more new experiences, and more unforgettable nights together

UP THE WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHSSS!!!

Last Friday our Gig Buddies crew headed out to Mt Smart Stadium to watch the NZ Warriors take on the Sydney Roosters, and what an awesome outing it turned out to be!

The boys had an absolute blast soaking up the atmosphere, cheering on the Warriors, and sharing their passion for rugby league with everyone around them. There were plenty of laughs, big reactions to the plays, and lots of proud Warriors supporters in the stands. The Warriors brought the energy and secured a huge 42–18 win over the Roosters, which made the night even more exciting for everyone there.

One of the best parts of the night was meeting new people who share the same love for rugby and the Warriors. It was great to see new friendships starting and everyone bonding over the game.

Thanks to everyone who came along and made the night such a great one. Nights like these are what Gig Buddies is all about — getting out in the community, enjoying live events, and making new mates along the way.

A big shoutout to Warriors Community Foundation for the tickets. We really appreciate your continued support!!

Gig Buddies had the absolute BEST time being part of Music in the Parks this year. From sunshine and singalongs to dancing on the grass and discovering amazing local talent, every event was filled with smiles, laughter, and unforgettable moments.

We loved seeing so many familiar faces and meeting new friends along the way. There’s something so special about live music bringing everyone together — and being able to share those experiences with our Gig Buddies community made it even more meaningful.

A huge thank you to Auckland Council and to everyone who came along, supported the events, and made this season so joyful. We’re already counting down to next year!

Until the next gig…

What an incredible night we had last Saturday at Auckland Domain for the Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park! Our Gig Buddies social was full of smiles, laughter, and great company as everyone came together to enjoy the magic of the evening.

We loved watching all the amazing performers on stage, singing along to familiar songs, and soaking up the festive atmosphere. The energy in the crowd was fantastic, and it was so special to share the experience together.

The night was perfectly topped off with the stunning fireworks finale, which had everyone in awe and ended the show on a truly magical note

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make it such a fun, memorable night. We’re already looking forward to more Gig Buddies adventure in 2026!

From theatre magic to parade mayhem, we definitely squeezed every bit of fun out of the last few days!

We kicked things off with the Wizard of Oz production by the National Youth Theatre at the Aotea Centre on Friday night. The show was vibrant, polished, and full of heart. Loved seeing accessibility front and centre too, with on-stage subtitles and a sign interpreter. Our buddies were fully immersed and really enjoyed every moment.

Then came the Farmers Santa Parade in Auckland CBD… and let’s just say it was beautiful chaos. Between the massive crowds and the temperamental weather, the day kept us on our toes. A few people had to pull out (understandable with that forecast!), but for those who braved it — we had a blast! The parade was full of energy, colour, and festive vibes, and we wrapped it all up with the after-party at Aotea Square.

Despite the madness, it was a weekend full of laughs, good company, and great memories.

Jasper and Kayla absolutely smashed their first night out as Gig Buddies last Friday! They headed to The Tuning Fork super early to claim their spot right up front — prime position for a full-on punk rock experience.

Lounge Apes, the tribute band of the night, tore through hits from Foo Fighters, Weezer, Green Day, and Nirvana, and these two didn’t miss a beat (or a lyric!). By the end of the night, they’d sung so loud they practically lost their voices… and loved every second of it.

Moments like this remind us how much of a difference it makes when someone is paired with the right buddy — someone who truly shares their passions, energy, and joy. When the match is right, the confidence, connection, and fun that follows is incredible.

Here’s to Jasper and Kayla, and to many more epic gigs and unforgettable moments!

Over the past two weekends, our Gig Buddies have had the amazing opportunity to attend the Cirque du Soleil: Corteo shows at Spark Arena in Auckland — and what a show it was!

A huge thank you to Spark Arena and Ticketmaster for their incredible generosity in donating free tickets. Your kindness made it possible for our buddies to enjoy an unforgettable night of wonder, laughter, and jaw-dropping performances together.

A few of our buddies have even shared their awesome photos from the shows — it’s been so lovely seeing everyone’s smiles and hearing about their favorite moments!

Moments like these remind us just how special it is to share experiences, connect with others, and celebrate the joy of live entertainment.
