In 1998, the Dannevirke Community Hospital unveiled a large wall design incorporating traditional and contemporary Māori art in the foyer of their new building.

Artist Ataneta Kani-Paewai gave the piece (titled 'Waiora') to the hospital on behalf of Rangitane o Tamaki Nui a Rua. Waiora "represents how holistic wellbeing has guided mankind through generations to the present day and uses traditional links to portray spiritual, mental, physical and environmental health using celestial and terrestrial knowledge."

From March 1998 until November 2020, our team at Tararua Health Group hung 'Waiora' proudly on their walls until it was time to repaint the building.

After a little bit of restoration work, Ataneta and her husband Manahi returned the piece at the end of June, and the hospital now feels whole again.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koe, Ataneta.

The OmniHealth team are proud to showcase the efforts of Tuakau Health Centre's 'Jammies in June' campaign.

Together with the local community, the Tuakau Heath Centre team collected many jammies for the Middlemore Foundation.

Children living in our most disadvantaged communities are three times more likely to end up in hospital. Helping to improve living conditions for kids, even by small, practical steps, can set them up for healthier lives and brighter futures.

Tino pai, Tuakau! What a fantastic effort.

“We want to ensure that nobody in the region has to travel to get their vaccine over Saddle Road to Palmerston North. There’s been no template to follow, we just say, ‘Yeah that’s a good idea, let’s do that'. There was never an option not to run it."

Speaking to NZ Doctor, Tania Chamberlain (Group Operations Manager, Tararua Health Group) explains how Tararua Health Group is collaborating with local iwi, pharmacies, other health care providers and the local DHB to ensure everyone in the Tararua can get their COVID-19 vaccination.

On the success of the vaccination drive, Tania says, "there’s been lots of positive feedback from the community, as well as low rates of “do not attend."

If you are interested in learning more about how OmniHealth can help empower your practice, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We work hard every day to ensure strong, effective and sustainable general practice systems for the future and would love to explore how we can potentially work together.

"It is just really to make sure we can close any gaps where there might be a shortage of supply at any particular time, or if there is extra demand."

Speaking to NZ Doctor, Mark Wills (our Managing Director) explains how OmniHealth offers a virtual 'locum' service to help practices facing patient overload.

A cloud-based solution allows our central telemedicine clinicians to remotely access patients' records, make notes in the records and write prescriptions. The practice bills and collects the patient fee through its normal system and pays a fee to OmniHealth for providing the overload service.

On its reception, Mark says, "it is working really well, and I think it's a signal of things to come."

If you are interested in learning more about how OmniHealth can help you or your practice, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We work hard every day to ensure strong, effective and sustainable general practice systems for the future and would love to explore how we can potentially work together.

Last Friday was Gumboot Friday here in Aotearoa New Zealand.

While OmniHealth is always proud of the efforts all of our clinical teams make to help improve the mental health of their communities on a daily basis, we were pleased to see them get behind this great initiative from I AM HOPE.

Last year in New Zealand 175 young people died by su***de and it is estimated another 3500 attempted to take their own lives. While Government agencies are doing their best some young people are stuck waiting up to six months to receive the counselling they so urgently need.

I AM HOPE is an initiative by The Key to Life Charitable Trust, a fundraising and advocacy organisation, which supports young people who are struggling with their mental health. They help connect young people with existing counsellors or therapists and provide funding so that kids get help as soon as they need it.

All donations made to the Gumboot Friday Fund directly support kids in need. Donations can only be accessed by a registered mental health professional on receipt of an invoice. Learn more here: https://buff.ly/3uoO64R

The victim is doing well, and earlier this week Kate received these flowers from their employer.

There's never been a better time to work in New Zealand's health care sector.

While it's no secret that New Zealand's COVID-19 status makes it a desirable place to live in the current world climate, there is much more to our island nation than our containment efforts. And we're proud to say Aotearoa offers a world-class recipe for better living — especially for health care professionals.

OmniHealth is continually looking to expand our clinical teams, and we have several opportunities across the country.

If you want to learn more about your New Zealand opportunity or OmniHealth's current openings, please do not hesitate to contact us. You can email us at recruitment@omnihealth.co.nz.

Also, if there is a specific role you are looking for or a particular area you want to work in, please let us know. The OmniHealth network is continuously expanding, and we may be able to help you find your dream role — with one of our peers or us.

Earlier this week, staff at Tararua Health Group began their COVID-19 vaccinations.

Immunisation against infectious diseases has been more effective in preventing illness and death than any other medical intervention.

OmniHealth supports the New Zealand government’s COVID-19 immunisation program as current research data shows the Pfizer vaccine is safe and effective for patients.

A heart-filled thank you to those at ProCare who helped provide the support required to facilitate this special moment.

OmniHealth is pleased to announce our partners, Sanford Health, selected Dr Peter Guy (Conifer Gardens Medical Centre) as the 2020 Sanford World Clinic Healthcare Excellence Physician Award recipient (from approximately 240 nominations).

The judges were impressed by Peter's nomination. In particular, how he is "very well respected", his "co-workers enjoy his down-to-earth personality", and "the fact he scores 10/10 for all encounters was refreshing." They also noted how Peter's "compassion, patience, knowledge and selfless acts" make him "a fine example of the 2020 Sanford World Clinic Healthcare Excellence Physician Award."

Congratulations on your achievement, Peter. You thoroughly deserve this recognition, and we are lucky to have you within the OmniHealth network.

OmniHealth is excited to share another team member, Ebson Abraham, is now a Nurse Practitioner. This qualification means he can now help Onerahi Family Healthcare's patients in more ways — from birth all the way through to elder care.

Born, raised and educated in South India, Ebson moved to Whangarei nearly ten years ago to help the local healthcare workforce through education and patient care.

Since then, he has completed a clinically-focused Master's Degree from the Univesity of Auckland, and the Northland DHB Hospital and NZNO have recognised his contributions to the nursing world.

Congratulations on your achievement, Ebson! Your passion, expertise and knowledge are a great addition to the Onerahi community, and we're thankful to have you in our network.

OmniHealth is proud to announce Melissa Lilley is now a Nurse Practitioner.

Working as a practice nurse for the past 14 years, Melissa decided to further her education once realising how much more she could do for the whānau she serves. Her last four years of study now enable Melissa to complete a more thorough assessment of health, order diagnostic tests (such as X-rays) and prescribe medications if necessary.

As an organisation, OmniHealth believes medical education is one of the most important general practice areas — and we actively encourage all staff to learn continuously.

Congratulations, Melissa! Your hard work, knowledge and determination greatly improve the lives of those you care for, and we're fortunate to have you in our network.

For many people, Christmas is a time of gifts and banquets with family and friends. But for others, Christmas can be lonely and isolating — especially for the elderly.

With this in mind, the team at Senior Care Health Centre decided to host a Christmas morning tea for the residents they provide care services. The event was a great success, with over 60 people coming together to enjoy some baked goods and Christmas carols with their GPs and nurses.

At OmniHealth, we embrace the notion of whanaungatanga (the close connection between people) and are proud of all our team members that live this value. While we may have no blood relation to our patients, we understand the importance of kinship and relationships in health — especially in the memorable year that is 2020.

A special thank you to the Senior Care team for organising such a great event.

OmniHealth is pleased to announce Dr Frances Matthews has won the inaugural fiction prize at The Shorties — the short story competition we're sponsoring this year.

With time to burn during the national COVID-19 lockdown, Frances Matthews reached for some relaxing reading – an account of the Justinian Plague’s arrival in Constantinople.

Then she noticed The Health Media’s Short Story Competition and got thinking: “If Constantinople could talk, what would she say?” With that, a winning entry was born. Not bad for a first effort.

The competition judges – Ruth Brown, Greg Judkins and Barbara Fountain – enjoyed Dr Matthews’ rich use of language and the parallels drawn between the past and the present. She wins $1000 in prize money and a copy of Dr Judkin’s first novel Biopsies.

The winning entry will be published in the first issue of the New Zealand Doctor | Rata Aotearoa next year (3 February).

Congratulations, Frances. A truly deserving winner.
