In 1998, the Dannevirke Community Hospital unveiled a large wall design incorporating traditional and contemporary Māori art in the foyer of their new building.
Artist Ataneta Kani-Paewai gave the piece (titled 'Waiora') to the hospital on behalf of Rangitane o Tamaki Nui a Rua. Waiora "represents how holistic wellbeing has guided mankind through generations to the present day and uses traditional links to portray spiritual, mental, physical and environmental health using celestial and terrestrial knowledge."
From March 1998 until November 2020, our team at Tararua Health Group hung 'Waiora' proudly on their walls until it was time to repaint the building.
After a little bit of restoration work, Ataneta and her husband Manahi returned the piece at the end of June, and the hospital now feels whole again.
Ngā mihi nui ki a koe, Ataneta.
