Helpful tips for combating dry eye:

🔹 Drink enough water! If your urine is the colour of apple juice, then you need to drink more water. Alcohol and caffeinated drinks do not necessarily count, as these can actually dehydrate rather than help with rehydration
🔹 Blink! This one may sound silly, but often when focusing on a screen or a task like reading, we unconsciously forget to blink. In fact, research suggests that we blink around 66% less per minute in front of screens. As blinking helps replenish the tear film over the eye, the result of not blinking sufficiently can lead to dry, burning, stinging eyes, or even watery eyes if the dryness leads to an overcompensation of tear production.
🔹 Be mindful of your environment: as temperatures starting to drop and heaters start to go on, dry eyes can start to surface. Be careful where the heater is directed when in the car i.e. not towards your face, and perhaps consider the use of lubricant drops at home.
🔹 Eating food groups rich in omega 3 oils: our tears are divided into three layers, once of which is a thin oily layer on top that prevents your tears from evaporating too quickly. Eating omega 3 rich foods can help improve the quality of the oily layer that our eyes produce, thereby helping to improve dry eye.
🔹 Being aware of the seasons: some seasons can bring hayfever, and with it ocular allergies. This can certainly exacerbate dry eyes, so it is important to keep on top of this.

Did you know that the eye is an extension of the brain?
The optic nerve does not stop at the eyeball, but carries on into the brain and makes its first synapse/neural connection somewhere in the middle of the brain, called the lateral geniculate nucleus. For this reason, certain conditions such as brain tumours, head trauma, multiple sclerosis, can impact the eyes, or in some cases, looking into the eyes can then lead to a diagnosis of these neural conditions.
