Across New Zealand, many whānau are grappling with a big decision: should mum or dad move into a rest home, or remain at home with professional support? At Kate McLean Homecare, we’ve seen time and again that care delivered in the comfort of home often leads to better outcomes—both clinically and emotionally.

💜 Person-Centred Care & Independence

Homecare allows clients to retain control over their daily routines and decisions. Whether it’s meal times, a favourite chair, or tending to the garden, these small freedoms promote dignity, reduce anxiety, and improve wellbeing. This sense of autonomy is key to better engagement and quality of life.

💜 Healing in Familiar Surroundings

It’s well documented—and clearly observed in our work—that recovery is faster and stress levels lower when clients remain in their own homes. Without the disruption of institutional routines and unfamiliar settings, emotional and physical health can flourish.

💜 Dedicated, Consistent Support

Unlike the rotating staff common in facilities, homecare enables caregivers to build meaningful, trusting relationships. They get to know the person—not just the care plan—recognising subtle changes in health or mood and acting early to prevent complications.

💜 Keeping Whānau Close

Homecare keeps families involved in everyday care. Shared routines, transparent communication, and a collaborative approach help strengthen relationships and reduce the sense of disconnection that can happen in residential settings.

💜 Tailored Care, Smarter Costs

No two clients are the same, so why should their care be? Homecare lets families choose only the services they need—whether that’s companionship, mobility support, or complex medical care. This flexible model can prove more cost-effective than bundled rest home fees.

💜 What the Evidence Tells Us

Research and our own experience show clients receiving care at home are more likely to manage chronic conditions successfully, experience less depression, and enjoy greater life satisfaction. It also reduces hospital admissions and the emotional toll on families.

We prioritise:

💜 Thorough assessments to create personalised care plans

💜 Oversight from our experienced Registered Nurse Care Manager

💜 Open, regular communication with families

💜 A holistic focus on wellbeing—connection, activity, and meaning, not just medical tasks

Choosing homecare may feel like a leap, but for many families, it leads to safer, happier outcomes and a stronger sense of connection. It’s not just about care—it’s about continuing to live well.

If you’re exploring the best care options for someone you love, we are happy to share how homecare might be the better—and kinder—choice.

🌿 Facing New Zealand's Aged Care Bed Shortage: Why Home is Often the Best Place to Be

Like many in the aged care sector, we at Kate McLean Homecare are acutely aware of the growing residential care bed shortage across Aotearoa. Families are increasingly finding it difficult to secure placements in aged residential facilities — a situation that's both challenging and worrying for older people and their whānau.

But amidst this challenge, there is also an opportunity.

For many older New Zealanders, staying in the comfort and familiarity of their own home, with tailored professional support, is not just a second-best option — it’s often the preferred outcome.

✅ Home-based care enables older people to maintain their independence and connection to their community.
✅ It supports emotional wellbeing by allowing people to remain in familiar surroundings, close to family, pets, gardens, and neighbours.
✅ Personalised in-home care ensures that the support people receive is exactly what they need, when they need it.
✅ Homecare is flexible and can adapt as a person's needs change over time.

At Kate McLean Homecare, we see every day how small things done well make a big difference. In this time of limited residential care options, homecare is not just a backup plan — it is a meaningful, life-enhancing choice.

If you're navigating aged care decisions for yourself or a loved one, know that staying at home with the right support is a positive and achievable outcome.

🤝 Collaborating for Compassionate Care: Partnering with Hospice for Palliative-Level Support

At Kate McLean Homecare, we know that truly exceptional palliative care is never delivered in isolation — it’s the result of a strong, multidisciplinary approach.

That’s why we’re proud to collaborate closely with local hospices and healthcare professionals across Auckland. Together, we bring together the skills and expertise of nurses, caregivers, hospice specialists, GPs, social workers, and whānau to create a seamless, person-centred support system.

Why is collaboration so important in palliative care?
✨ It ensures every aspect of a client’s well-being — physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural — is supported.
✨ It allows for clear, consistent communication between all care providers, avoiding gaps or duplication in care.
✨ It empowers whānau by involving them in care decisions and providing them with the right support.
✨ It delivers the right care, at the right time, by the right people — whether that’s managing symptoms, offering counselling, or practical assistance.
✨ It helps clients stay in the place they feel most comfortable: their own home.

We’re deeply grateful to all our hospice partners and fellow healthcare professionals who share this vision. Collaboration and communication are key to ensuring no one faces this journey alone.

Together, we’re stronger. 💜

🤝 Building a Holistic Care Plan: Why Collaboration Matters

At Kate McLean Homecare, we believe that truly exceptional care goes beyond a single approach—it takes a team. That’s why we champion a multidisciplinary approach to homecare, bringing together carers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and family members to create care plans that are not only comprehensive but also personalised to each individual’s needs.

So, why does collaboration matter?

🔹 Personalised Care: When professionals work together, care plans are tailored to address every aspect of a person’s well-being—from physical rehabilitation and pain management to daily living tasks and emotional support.

🔹 Enhanced Independence: Physiotherapists and OTs provide practical strategies and home modifications to empower clients to live more independently, while carers ensure these strategies are part of everyday routines.

🔹 Better Communication: Regular collaboration and open communication between the care team and family members help prevent misunderstandings and ensure everyone is on the same page about care priorities.

🔹 Faster Recovery: A coordinated approach supports more effective rehabilitation, whether it’s post-surgery or managing a chronic condition, helping clients reach their goals faster.

🔹 Emotional Support: Involving family members in the care process not only strengthens support networks but also reassures clients that they are surrounded by people who understand their needs.

By integrating a range of skills and perspectives, we’re not just providing care—we’re building a supportive community that surrounds our clients with the expertise and compassion they need to thrive at home.

Talking to a Loved One About Receiving Respite Care at Home – A Compassionate Approach

Bringing up the topic of home respite care with a loved one can be difficult. Many people worry about losing independence or feel they don’t want to be a burden. The key is to approach the conversation with empathy, reassurance, and understanding.

✨ Imagine this scenario:
Sarah’s dad, Jim, has been living independently, but she’s noticed he’s struggling with daily tasks. She also sees that her mum, his primary caregiver, is exhausted. When Sarah gently suggests respite care, Jim resists, saying, “I don’t want strangers in my home.”

Instead of pushing, Sarah reassures him:
🟢 “Dad, I know how important your independence is. This isn’t about taking that away—it's about making sure you and Mum both get the support you need.”
🟢 “A respite carer isn’t here to replace anyone, just to lend a hand with things that might make your days easier.”
🟢 “Maybe we try it once a week to start and see how you feel?”

By framing respite care as support rather than loss of independence, families can help loved ones feel more comfortable with the idea.

At Kate McLean Homecare, we understand these conversations can be tough, but you’re not alone. Our compassionate team is here to help make the transition smooth and positive for everyone involved.

Caring for a loved one is one of the most selfless roles a person can take on—but without the right support, it can also take a serious toll on their health, finances, and emotional well-being.‍

Did you know that for every $1 invested in caregiver support, the return to the health system can be as high as $8? Research has shown that when primary carers receive just 12 hours of respite care per week, the benefits are enormous:

✔ Fewer hospital admissions
✔ Reduced stress and burnout for carers
✔ Delayed need for costly residential care
✔ Better overall health for both the carer and the person receiving care‍

In New Zealand, residential care can cost upwards of $1,450 per week. Regular, high-quality homecare services—whether through private providers or government-funded support—help people stay in their homes longer while ensuring their loved ones get the care they need. It is widely documented that New Zealand has a residential bed shortage, which can be stressful for those planning ahead for a loved one they care for.‍

At Kate McLean Homecare, we believe in preventative, proactive care that enhances quality of life and reduces long-term costs. Whether it’s a few hours a week or full-time assistance, investing in homecare isn’t just about today—it’s about creating a sustainable future for families and the health system.

17/02/2025

More Kiwis than ever are choosing homecare as the preferred way to age or recover in comfort. With New Zealand’s ageing population and growing demand for personalised care, families are seeing the value of staying at home with the right support—rather than moving into residential care.

But starting the conversation about homecare with a loved one isn’t always easy. Many people worry about losing independence or feel hesitant about accepting help.

Here’s how to approach it with care and understanding:

✅ Start early & listen – Bring up the idea before a crisis happens. Ask how they feel about their future needs and listen to their concerns.

✅ Highlight independence, not limitations – Homecare is about empowering people to live safely at home, not taking away their freedom.

✅ Share real-life benefits – From companionship to help with daily tasks, homecare enhances quality of life without disrupting routines.

✅ Offer choices, not decisions – Involve them in the process so they feel in control. Look at different options together and explore what suits them best.

At Kate McLean Homecare, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and valued in their own home. If you’re considering homecare for a loved one, we’re here to help guide the conversation. 💜

As our population ages, the need for compassionate, personalised care has never been greater. At Kate McLean Homecare, we believe that homecare plays a vital role in empowering elderly individuals to maintain their independence, dignity, and well-being—right where they feel most comfortable.

Homecare isn’t just about assistance with daily tasks; it’s about enhancing quality of life. Whether it’s providing companionship, helping with mobility, or ensuring medication is taken on time, professional caregivers offer tailored support that enables seniors to live safely and confidently at home.

Why does this matter?
✅ Promotes independence – Homecare allows seniors to continue living in their own space, surrounded by familiar comforts.
✅ Supports mental and emotional well-being – Regular social interaction reduces loneliness and enhances happiness.
✅ Reduces hospital visits – Preventative care and assistance with daily routines help minimise health risks.
✅ Provides peace of mind for families – Knowing a loved one is receiving compassionate, professional care brings reassurance to families.

Ageing should be about thriving, not just surviving. By investing in quality homecare, we can ensure that our elderly loved ones live with dignity, choice, and the support they deserve.

At Kate McLean Homecare, we are proud to make this vision a reality every day. 💜

Why Homecare is growing:

In recent years, the demand for homecare solutions has been on the rise, reshaping the way we think about healthcare and support for loved ones.

At Kate McLean Homecare, we understand why more and more families are choosing homecare over traditional institutional care. Here are some key reasons why homecare is becoming a growing priority:

1. Personalised Care Tailored to Individual Needs
Homecare allows caregivers to provide one-on-one support tailored to the unique needs of each person. Unlike institutional care, where attention is often divided, homecare ensures that every individual receives focused and compassionate care in the comfort of their own home.

2. Maintaining Independence and Comfort
Home is where people feel most comfortable. It’s familiar, it’s personal, and it’s a space filled with memories. Homecare enables individuals to maintain their independence and daily routines while receiving the support they need, fostering emotional well-being and dignity.

3. Cost-Effective Care Options
For many families, homecare offers a more affordable alternative to institutional care. By focusing on specific services needed rather than a comprehensive facility package, families can manage costs while still ensuring high-quality support.

4. Improved Health Outcomes
Studies show that individuals recovering at home often experience better health outcomes compared to those in institutional settings. The reduced risk of infections, coupled with personalised attention and a familiar environment, can significantly contribute to recovery and overall health.

5. Stronger Family Connections
Homecare facilitates greater involvement of family members in a loved one’s care. This proximity not only strengthens emotional bonds but also ensures families stay actively engaged in decisions and day-to-day interactions.

At Kate McLean Homecare, we are proud to provide services that meet these growing needs. Our team is dedicated to delivering compassionate, professional, and reliable care tailored to your loved one’s specific situation. Whether it’s assistance with daily tasks, specialised health support, or simply companionship, we are here to help.

If you’re considering care options for a loved one, let us help you explore the benefits of homecare. Together, we can ensure the best possible support for those who mean the most to you.

As global populations age, the importance of homecare services has never been clearer. For many older adults, the goal is to maintain independence, dignity, and a sense of well-being while staying in the comfort of their own homes. Homecare plays a pivotal role in making this possible.

By providing tailored support—ranging from medical assistance to everyday tasks—homecare empowers older adults to live fuller, more autonomous lives. It allows them to remain connected to their communities and families while receiving the care they need. This is especially vital in fostering mental health, reducing feelings of isolation, and ensuring physical safety.

For families, homecare offers peace of mind, knowing that their loved ones are receiving compassionate, professional support. It bridges the gap between institutional care and full independence, ensuring a balance of support and freedom.

As we continue to innovate in healthcare, it’s crucial to recognise and advocate for the value of homecare services. By investing in this area, we can enhance quality of life for ageing populations, create sustainable care models, and honour the contributions of older generations.

As General Manager of Kate McLean Homecare, Aimee has witnessed firsthand how the homecare industry is evolving to meet the changing needs of New Zealanders. Emerging technologies, policy shifts, and innovative strategies are redefining how we deliver care—and in-home care is playing an increasingly vital role.

One key driver? The growing pressure on rest homes due to bed shortages. A recent report revealed that demand for aged care beds is projected to outstrip supply by over 4,000 beds by 2030. With our aging population, this shortfall underscores the urgency of finding sustainable solutions.

This is where in-home care shines. Studies show that aging in place, with the right support, leads to better physical and mental health outcomes. Clients can maintain their independence, stay connected to their communities, and receive personalised care tailored to their unique needs—all while alleviating pressure on residential facilities.

Technology is also transforming how we deliver care. Tools such as telehealth and remote monitoring enable safer and more efficient care delivery in some instances. However, while technology is increasingly important, it cannot replace the value of one-to-one human connection. Building trust, showing empathy, and providing personalised support remain the cornerstone of quality care—and these can only be achieved through meaningful, in-person interactions.

Policy advancements are helping, too. Government programs that support in-home care, such as subsidies and respite care initiatives, empower more families to embrace this option. Aimee would like to see the homecare subsidy for respite care be equal to that of what residential respite care receives. With the known shortage of beds, surely it’s better to keep people at home, in familiar surroundings, as not everyone finds moving into a rest home for respite care the best outcome. It seems defeatist to have organisations delivering the same level of care at home as someone would receive in a rest home, but not receive the same subsidy amount.

At Kate McLean Homecare, we’re proud to be part of this dynamic landscape. We’re leveraging these trends to provide exceptional, client-centered care while championing the benefits of aging at home.

Excited to be in this month’s Verve magazine with Marina German at AgeWell Physiotherapy. We talk about our services and how a combination of in-home care and the right physiotherapy plan is such a great fit for older people.

We both believe that choosing the right combination of services allows people to remain at home and gives them every opportunity to remain there for as long as possible.
