In Ayurveda, oil is more than moisture - it is nourishment, warmth, steadiness, and care.

Abhyanga is a daily Ayurvedic ritual: a traditional self-massage with warm oil, used to calm the nervous system, nourish the skin and tissues, and support overall balance.

Usually practised before bathing or showering, abhyanga involves applying gently warmed oil to the body using long strokes along the limbs and circular motions around the joints.

At Ayurveda NZ, we offer our own dosha-specific Sattva Botanicals™ massage oils. To purchase, click the link in bio or visit our website.

Even a few mindful minutes each day can become a powerful ritual of care.

This World Health Day, we are reflecting on this year’s theme, “Together for health. Stand with science.”, through an Ayurvedic lens.

Wellbeing grows through the small things — how we eat, rest, move, digest, and care for ourselves over time.

At Ayurveda New Zealand, this means valuing both science and the daily practices that help us feel balanced, supported, and well.

A gentle reminder: calm is something we create, not something we wait for.

Here are some Ayurvedic ways to slow down at this time of year:

◇ Begin with three conscious breaths before you start your day or transition between tasks — a simple reset for the nervous system.
◇ Favour slow, grounding yoga such as gentle sun salutations, hip openers and supported forward folds to release stored tension.
◇ Warm oil self-massage on the feet, legs or shoulders to ease stress and settle Vata during busy, changeable periods.
◇ Sip warm herbal teas like ginger, tulsi or cinnamon to calm and centre.
◇ Choose warm, grounding meals such as soups, stews, kitchari, roasted root vegetables, oats or rice, with seasonal produce like apples, pears, beetroot, pumpkin and feijoas.
◇ Create a mini evening ritual, even just 5 minutes: a warm shower, light stretching, dimmed lights and an earlier wind-down.

Happy Easter Sunday 🌿

Here in New Zealand, Easter arrives in early April alongside the seasonal transition into autumn - a time that Ayurveda views as especially supportive for slowing down, grounding, and restoring balance.

This makes it a beautiful time for Panchakarma - a traditional Ayurvedic cleansing and rejuvenating therapy that helps reset the body, clear accumulated imbalance, and create space for deeper healing.

If this feels like the right moment to support your own renewal, book in for an Ayurvedic consultation to explore whether Panchakarma may be right for you.

Why Ayurvedic Cooking is Good for You ✨

Ayurvedic eating is a nourishing, intuitive way of eating for long-term health and vitality.

Here are the benefits:

• Personalised nutrition – Choose foods that support your unique dosha (Vata, Pitta or Kapha) and your body’s individual needs.

• Supports digestion – Ayurvedic cooking strengthens Agni (digestive fire), improving nutrient absorption and reducing bloating.

• Builds immunity – Seasonal ingredients and healing spices like turmeric, ginger and cumin support the body’s natural defences.

• Steady energy & mental clarity – Balanced meals help stabilise blood sugar, supporting focus, mood and sustained energy.

• In rhythm with nature – Eating with the seasons helps the body stay balanced throughout the year.

If you'd like to learn more about Ayurveda and how to eat an Ayurvedic diet, come along to our Ayurvedic Cooking Demonstration & Dinner, Wednesday 18th March, 6pm - 9pm at The Life Centre, Auckland.
