Something that is really important to us at HolisticBaby is mental health and particularly after your baby arrives.

You can feel a whole lot of different, and sometimes confusing emotions. Your hormone levels are balancing out and you might find yourself struggling with the transition into motherhood. THIS IS TOTALLY NORMAL!!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Most mums experience some form of “Baby Blues”, which is when the hormones change after birth and your milk starts to come in. You can feel overwhelmed, tearful and more emotional than usual.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Postnatal Depression is similar to the baby blues but feelings of depression - the loss of interest or pleasure in doing things you used to do hang around longer and may be more intense.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Postnatal Psychosis is very serious but it is quite rare. It can occur after delivery and involves symptoms of being out of touch with reality, having delusions or hallucinations. Urgent treatment is required.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you need help, speak to someone you trust - your husband, partner, friend or family member about how you are feeling. Contact your GP or LMC, midwife or obstetrician

Did you know healthy newborns often cry 1-2 hours in a 24 hr period in the first 1-2 weeks.

This is normal!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

All babies cry and it can be quite upsetting to hear but remember this is how your baby communicates with you in the early days. ⠀⠀⠀

It can be really hard to figure out what your baby is trying to communicate but over time when you become more cued into your baby you will learn to decipher their different cry’s. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your baby might be trying to tell you;⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They are hungry.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They are tired.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They need their nappy to be changed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They want the warmth and comfort of you .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They are hot.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They are cold.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They have gas.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They may be sick.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They would love some rich sensory stimulation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Try offering a feed and a cuddle and if your baby is still crying look to see what else could be the reason. If all else fails, take a walk outside and let them feel the cold/heat on their face and listen to all the beautiful noises…⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It’s not my turn.

It’s not my turn to go where I want, when I want. It’s not my turn to put my wants and needs first.

It’s not my turn to get butterflies on a first date. It’s not my turn to plan a wedding.

I’ve had my turn.

It’s not my turn to leisurely enjoy my coffee with slow mornings. It’s not my turn to explore all of my interests and hobbies.

It’s not my turn to spend my days as I please. It’s not my turn to spoil grandchildren.

Hopefully, I’ll have my turn.

It’s not my turn to take a Mediterranean vacation. It’s not my turn to maintain a luscious backyard oasis.

It’s not my turn to have abs. It’s not my turn to binge-watch Netflix when I’ve had a hard week.

Maybe one day I’ll have a turn...or, maybe not.

But, it is my turn…

It’s my turn to have some sleepless nights.

It’s my turn for late-night snacks, so I don’t have to share.

It’s my turn to have my clothes stretched out by little hands.

It’s my turn to have fingerprints on the screen door.

It’s my turn to have Cocomelon stuck in my head.

It’s my turn to do laundry. So. Much. Laundry.

It’s my turn to keep romance alive amidst the routine.

But even more than that,

It’s my turn to start family traditions.

It’s my turn to memorize the perfect squishiness of chubby baby faces.

It’s my turn to let a popsicle make anything better.

It’s my turn to heal boo-boo’s with a kiss.

It’s my turn to cuddle and rock.

It’s my turn for park days and play dates.

It’s my turn for first steps, first words, and first days of school.

It’s my turn to earn my laugh lines and gray hairs.

It’s my turn to soak up the beautiful, exhausting, magic of motherhood while the turn is still mine.

Nobody wants them but many women get them from pregnancy and from childbirth or in the postnatal period.

These occur because the weight of the uterus on the pelvic floor and then with the extra pressure on your lower re**um from pushing your baby through the birth canal or sometimes from having firm stools after the baby is born can cause haemorrhoids. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Haemorrhoids are swollen veins around your re**um, they can be on the outside that you can see, they can also be on the inside and they can be painful, they can be itchy and they can sometimes bleed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To keep your stools soft as constipation will often make straining worse and increase your incidents of haemorrhoids not going away on their own, then make sure you are drinking plenty of water and eating a diet high in fibre – this also includes vegetables, fruits and you may need to take something like psyllium husks or Metamucil. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To any discomfort, you can apply a cold compress to the area, adding witch-hazel to the compress can be helpful as can sitting in a warm salt bath.
These can help provide some relief. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are topical treatments you can buy from pharmacies or you can talk to your LMC about this but you could also use natural remedies that you can get from most pharmacies as well.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The good news is most haemorrhoids settle within a few days with rest and good advice but if they don’t and you are in pain, please talk to your midwife or your LMC or your GP.

All babies cry and it can be difficult not only to hear them crying but also understanding why they are crying.

It will take time to cue into your baby, which is very normal and soon enough you will learn why they are crying and with different sounds, what those cry’s mean.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When you baby is a newborn some of these cues below could mean they are hungry - interestingly enough, crying is a late hungry cues.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Rooting their mouth open wide and moving their head from side to side as if they are looking for your breast. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Bringing their hand to their mouth and trying to suck on their hands or fingers.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. They stick their tongue out.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Sucking sound - almost like a smacking of their lips.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. When nothing else is working even if you think they can’t be hungry, then offering the baby a breastfeed can be the quickest way to help a baby relax as feeding offers lots of sensory contact that nourishes and calms their nervous system.

Some parents may find when they try to breastfeed in a new space they haven’t taken their baby before, that they suddenly refuse to feed. This can be a stressful situation for parents…⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For example, when you are visiting family, at a doctor’s appointment or maybe it’s even just a different room in your own home - what is happening?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your baby may not seem to be focused, they might keep turning their head away looking around to see where they are and what’s happening around them. They become easily startled by all the new noises around them. They may appear anxious and may possibly even cry when put to the breast. In short, It is all new and frightening for them.

How can you respond?

Communicate and connect with your baby “Yeah sweetheart, Im here, it all seems new doesnt it?”. “I’m listening, I am here for you”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At every startled response, a calm and loving explanation - “oh thats grandma telling a story”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Try 15 minutes of creating this safe space for your baby before initiating the feed.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Most of us get up in the morning or go to bed at night and we already have a list of things we’ve got to do tomorrow or today.

Then something random pops up that you weren’t expecting and sometimes you just go into a crisis mode as there’s just so much to achieve today.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s a bit like doing the housekeeping , sometimes you’ve got to prioritise and work out what’s important, what really doesn’t matter and just do the things that make you have a pretty good day regardless of things that have popped up. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Always make time to just sit there and actually plan you day because when we plan our day, we can often realise that somethings aren’t really that important.
