We are not “addicted” to sugar. We only feel like we are when we restrict it. If we truly felt like we could have as much sugar as we wanted whenever we wanted it we would have no need to over eat it. Unlike drugs, where we build up a tolerance and want more and more. Sugar addiction is another lie fed to us by diet culture.

While there isn’t scientific evidence at this time to support the notion of sugar addiction, I don’t want to dismiss the lived experience for those who feel totally out of control with food.

I have been quoted at length in the latest copy of Healthy Food Guide about the problems with dieting and restriction. I have not been misquoted but the article has been morphed into a weight loss angle so I have definitely been misrepresented, as this is strongly against my HAES principles. Intuitive eating and letting go of the binge restrict cycle is an important part of recovery but if the focus remains on one’s body weight and or shape, this does not lead to recovery. Implying that intuitive eating will lead to weight loss is also unethical because there’s a good chance it won’t, which then leads people to feel like a failure because it “didn’t work”. I am contacting HFG to express my concern and, quite frankly, outrage. I’d like to reiterate that intuitive eating for weight loss is NOT helpful for people.

If you want to go on a diet, no one can stop you. (Statistically the most likely outcome is long term weight gain, but that’s your choice.) But please don’t talk about your diet. It’s extremely damaging for others to hear about how unacceptable it is to be in a large body.

This is the kind of rubbish people have to put up with to make them feel like fast sustainable weight loss is doable and that they just need to keep looking for the answer. Claiming to have a cognitive scientific approach to weight loss, then just saying “stop eating sugar and carbs. Ever”. Brilliant.

Susan Peirce Thompson struggled for decades to lose weight. She tried everything, from diet books and rigid workout regimens to running a marathon. She even considered having a gastric bypass, an intensive surgery that can involve months of counseling and preparation.

You are not bad at dieting. Dieting is bad for you. You have not failed at diets. Diets have failed you.

Happy International Women’s Day! Let’s celebrate by trying to recognise that constantly trying to change and shrink our bodies keep us defeated and stuck in the submissive role that the patriarchy puts us in. We are more than that. We must be become more than that.

So many clients come to me with a “weight problem” that turns out to be binge-eating disorder. The sad thing is that these people have been told to diet in order to lose weight and it is the dieting mindset and behaviour which maintains the disorder. This is a great article if you want to know more. The stats are American but you get an idea of how prevalent the disorder is.

Many struggling dieters actually suffer from binge eating disorder, and could manage their condition—and lose weight—with the help of a psychologist.
