Considering getting surgery overseas? There are a lot of factors that can impact the quality of your procedure, and travelling overseas for a surgery comes with a lot of risks, many of which you might not expect.

🔹What to Consider

Ophthalmology is a highly specialised field, with surgery requiring precision, care, and expertise.

Lower upfront surgery costs may be appealing to many patients, however, outcomes and standards of care can vary significantly, or involve a tradeoff that goes beyond price.

Surgery in NZ

Local procedures have several benefits:
🔹Local procedures have several benefits:
🔹High standards and regulation of surgeons in New Zealand.
🔹Thorough consultations with personalised assessments and treatment.
🔹Easier access to pre- and post-operative care.
🔹Ongoing follow-up and management of healing.
🔹Clear communication and continuity of care.
🔹Reduced risks from long-distance travel after surgery.
🔹Surgeons are readily available to address any complications that may arise.

Surgery Overseas

Facts for consideration for international surgery should include:

🔹Varied surgical standards, training, and regulations across countries.
🔹Limited follow-up care after returning home, impacting complication management.
🔹Risks from traveling after surgery.
🔹Potential side effects may not be covered by your health insurance if your surgery is done overseas*
🔹Additional costs for flights, accommodation, and recovery time.

*Refer to your health insurance provider for more detail.

Making the right choice

Surgical costs are shaped by many factors, including expertise of highly trained surgeons, strict safety standards, and advanced surgical technology. When surgery is not performed correctly, long-term complications can arise, often resulting in significantly higher costs over time.

That’s why decisions should be guided by safety, experience, and long term care, not cost alone.

By choosing local, you choose consistent, high quality care from start to finish.

Curious about cataract surgery? Read expert advice, the latest vision care trends, and essential tips about What to Expect with Cataract Surgery from Auckland Eye.

🔹HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
Cataract surgery is incredibly quick, and usually takes less than 30 minutes. However, to allow time for preparation and recovery, you can expect to be at surgery for roughly two hours.
You won’t need to stay overnight at the clinic, but you will need someone to drive you home.

🔹WHAT DOES THE SURGERY INVOLVE?
Cataract surgery is incredibly safe, and performed while you’re still awake. To ensure you don’t feel a thing, you’ll be given both eye drops, and a local anaesthetic.

The procedure involves creating a small incision, which allows an ultrasound probe to break up the cataract, and gently suction it out from the eye. Afterwards, a new lens— called the IntraOcular Lens— will be inserted, and will replace the previous lens.

🔹THE RECOVERY PERIOD
For a few days after surgery, it’s common for your eyes to feel sore, or itchy. You may also have watery eyes, and difficulty seeing in bright light.
During this period, it’s important that you take things easy, and rest. Avoid bending over, picking up heavy objects, or putting any pressure on your eye.
You’ll need clearance from your doctor before you can drive again, though this usually happens at the first post-op check, a day or two after surgery.

Ever wondered what the rarest eye colour is? Surprisingly, green eyes are one of the rarest eye colours in the world, followed closely by grey.

Eye colour is determined by the amount of melanin in the eye, with less melanin causing eyes to be lighter. There are other factors, such as pigmentation, and even how reflected light scatters, which affect the colour of your eyes.

What colour are your eyes? Let us know in the comments!

Microneedling with Purasomes is an advanced skincare treatment that combines traditional microneedling with the application of Purasomes, a type of regenerative serum or biological complex designed to enhance skin repair and rejuvenation.

What is Microneedling?
Microneedling (also called collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses tiny, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin.

This stimulates:
🔹Collagen and elastin production
🔹Skin regeneration
🔹Improved texture and tone

It's commonly used for:
🔹Fine lines and wrinkles
🔹Acne scars
🔹Enlarged pores
🔹Overall skin rejuvenation

Benefits of Microneedling:
🔹Boosted collagen and elastin production
🔹Faster healing than microneedling alone
🔹Improved skin texture, tone, and hydration
🔹Enhanced glow and skin radiance
🔹May help with pigmentation, scars, and fine lines

As the leaves change and the weather gets colder, it’s important to look after your eyes this Autumn.

HOW AUTUMN AFFECTS YOUR EYES
Autumn leaves, while beautiful, can cause eye problems. As the leaves decompose, they release mold and fungal spores into the air, which some people are allergic to.

Additionally, the shift in temperature can cause other issues, especially for those with dry eyes. More indoor heating means drier air, and more time spent inside puts further strain on the eyes.

DRY EYES OR ALLERGIES?
Distinguishing between Dry Eye and allergies can be challenging due to similar symptoms.

The presence of itchiness is a telltale sign of allergies. If itching is accompanied by sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and watery eyes, it is likely a case of autumn allergies.

Floaters are tiny translucent spots or strands that drift across your vision, caused by small clumps in the eye’s gel-like center (the vitreous body).

While often a normal part of ageing, a sudden increase can signal a serious eye problem and should be checked by an ophthalmologist.

🔹Causes
As the vitreous ages, it becomes more watery and tiny clumps can form, casting shadows on the retina and creating floaters.

They’re often more noticeable against bright backgrounds or when your eyes move quickly.
Most are harmless, but a sudden increase can be a sign of retinal detachment and should be checked promptly.

🔹Treatment for larger options
If large floaters affect your vision, vitrectomy (VR) surgery may be recommended. This procedure involves draining the vitreous fluid from the eye and replacing it with a saline solution.

Any floaters are removed along with the fluid, and the body replaces the vitreous fluid in the weeks after surgery.

Amblyopia affects 2-3% of New Zealanders, and is often a sign of other issues, such as astigmatism, or myopia.

Amblyopia is caused by the brain favouring one eye over the other. Over time, this causes vision to worsen in the weaker eye, and the eye may begin to wonder.

Treatment for Amblyopia is quite simple, but may take a long time. Although most children will experience improved vision in a few weeks, it may take six months to two years for treatment.

At Auckland Eye, we offer world-class eye care. If you’re concerned about amblyopia affecting you or someone close to you, get in touch with our team today.
