If you've ever tried to quit drinking using just willpower, you know exactly how terrifying a holiday dinner party can be. Especially one with friends, where the "good wine" is flowing freely and everyone is partaking.

Usually, situations like that mean spending the entire night white-knuckling your way through the evening. Obsessing over what's in everyone else's glass. Feeling deprived. Feeling like you're missing out on the connection and the fun.

When I wake up to messages like this, it is the best feeling in the world. Because this is the ultimate goal. Not white-knuckling your way through the weekend. Not exhausting yourself fighting cravings. Not avoiding every social event.

We rarely talk about the "in-between" seasons of our lives. That’s what Black Saturday represents to me. The heavy part has happened, but the triumph hasn't arrived yet. It’s just... quiet.

I see this so often in the journey of healing. Whether you are breaking the compulsion to numb out or untangling years of chronic anxiety, there is always a Saturday.

It’s that terrifying, uncomfortable space where you’ve decided you want to change, but the new freedom hasn’t quite clicked into place yet. You’re just sitting in the dark, waiting, and your survival brain is screaming at you to go back to what’s familiar, even if it hurts.

Maundy Thursday is a day that always makes me pause and think about the true meaning of service and sacrifice. And honestly? Whenever I reflect on that, I think of so many of you.

I see how deeply you care for the people in your life. You pour from a cup that has been empty for a long time. You make sure your partner is supported, your kids have everything they need, and every fire at work is put out. You are constantly washing everyone else's feet.

But then the evening comes. The house gets quiet. And you are left with this profound, exhausting feeling of having nothing left for yourself. That’s usually when the anxiety spirals, or when reaching for the wine feels like the only way to finally exhale.

I just want to gently remind you of something today: You cannot keep sacrificing your own well-being to sustain everyone else. Your healing isn't selfish. It is the only way you can truly, sustainably show up for the people you love.
