Today we are proud to support the UN International Day of Care & Support, and the Carers NZ and Carers Alliance spotlight on carers and their important unpaid role. More than a million New Zealanders support a friend or family member who is frail, unwell, or has a long-term health condition or disability. Caring for family members who rely on this support is a common role, one we may all experience in our lives, but a recent survey completed by 1700 carers shows that 92% feel invisible and unvalued.

Today has the simple goal of showing appreciation to family carers, such as:
* Call, text, email to say hi and thanks
* Take time for a chat
* Drop off something yummy
* Offer to support with a chore
* Go for a drive, walk, movie or outing - make time just for them

Take some time today to make a family carer you know feel seen and appreciated.

We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to The Trusts Community Foundation for their generous funding towards our staffing and equipment needs for He Whare Korowai – Home From Home, our new 24/7 care service.

Their support has played a vital role in helping us establish this new model of care - a place designed to feel like home, where patients and whānau can receive round-the-clock care and comfort when it’s needed most.

We’re deeply grateful for their commitment to our community and their belief in the work we do.

Wow, what an incredible day at The Side Show!
Hosted by the amazing team from Trouble Bound HRC, this event brought together car enthusiasts, families, live bands (including the awesome kids’ band Skeleton Police), fantastic food, and great company — all for a good cause.

Thanks to everyone’s generosity, The Side Show raised nearly $7,000 for Hospice West Auckland – that’s phenomenal!

We’re so grateful to everyone who made the day such a success — including EasyMoves Ltd for donating the venue, and Burnsco Westgate and Mitre 10 Westgate for their generous raffle prizes.

A massive thank you to Shane and the entire Trouble Bound Hot Rod Club team for putting on such an epic event and choosing to support Hospice.

We were deeply moved by the number of people who shared their Hospice stories with us on the day. Among those stories was one especially close to our hearts — Mary-Rose’s. A cherished member of the Trouble Bound Hot Rod Club and one of our beloved Hospice patients, she passed away in January 2025. The book she authored, My Granddad Drives a Hot Rod!, beautifully celebrates the passion and spirit of her community: https://www.hwa.org.nz/2023/09/26/hot-rods-and-silver-linings-making-the-most-of-every-moment/

🚗 Driven to Collect: 8,000 Cars and Counting

Robert’s lifelong passion for collecting Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars has brought him joy, focus and purpose — and today his collection numbers more than 8,000 cars (and counting!).

In our latest story, Robert shares how his love of collecting continues to give him energy and inspiration, and how Hospice West Auckland’s support has helped him keep doing what he loves.
