Ever wondered how new medication or treatments are confirmed as safe and effective before they make it to you?

Before any treatment makes it to market, it must go through four carefully managed phases of clinical research, each one building on the last.

1️⃣ Phase 1 is where it all starts. These are the first tests of a new medicine in a small group of healthy participants to check if it is safe, what side effects it causes, and what dose is appropriate.
2️⃣ Phase 2 shifts the focus to patients living with the condition the treatment is designed for. This is about determining the most suitable doses to use in patients while also looking for those early signs of efficacy.
3️⃣ Phase 3 goes bigger, with often thousands of participants, at multiple sites across the globe. This is where the treatment is compared against existing options to gather the evidence needed for pharmaceutical approval.
4️⃣ Phase 4 happens once the treatment is approved and out in the world. Research continues to understand long-term safety across a much wider population.

Every phase and every participant play a key role to make new cures possible.

Curious about what taking part actually looks like? We'd love to walk you through it. Register with us at https://loom.ly/EkjQGFY

Playing a role in potentially lifesaving medication is an uplifting and aspirational feeling for all of us at NZCR. That’s why we’re incredibly excited to share the Phase 3 study results from recent trial named HAELO, which investigated a one-time medication that could help mitigate the potentially life-threatening effects of a rare genetic condition.

Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic condition in which patients experience potentially life-threatening swelling including in the face, upper airway, abdomen and extremities. Trials have observed the application of a one-time medication, Lonvo-z.

With news of the trial success, it opens the door to potentially ending the impacts HAE has on thousands of people worldwide.

Meet Margaret, a Research Assistant here at NZCR.

Margaret comes from Macau, a Special Administrative Region of China, and before moving to New Zealand and studying public health at University of Auckland - Waipapa Taumata Rau, she worked as a registered pediatric nurse.

Having a patient-focused background blended with technical knowledge makes her a perfect fit to be a research assistant with NZCR.

While she’s only been with us for two months, Margaret said she’s already learned a lot about clinical trials, patient care, and loves the feeling of things running smoothly.

“My team has been incredibly supportive and welcoming, which made settling in so much easier. Everyone is so kind!

“I enjoy being involved in both the learning and practical sides of my role and it feels rewarding to know I can help the team run smoothly.”
