A big thank you to Z Energy for including us in this year’s Good in the Hood initiative! 🎉

Warren from accounts popped along to Z Greenlane for the handover, where he received a coffee, a certificate, and the funding that will support our mahi.

And it wasn’t just us. Other incredible charities were also part of this round, including Dementia NZ, Women’s Refuge, Blind Low Vision NZ’s service dogs, Big Buddy and more. Warren said it was really special meeting such lovely people and hearing how they are doing in today’s economic climate.🤝

We’re so grateful to everyone who fuelled up and placed a token for The Hearing House. Your support helps tamariki with cochlear implants and their whānau access life- changing hearing and communication services.

Our adorable client Tariana came in with her grandmother today and it just so happens to be her 6th birthday! 🥳

We gave her a beautiful knitted doll, kindly made by Annette Brooks from the Kracker Knitters of Karaka. Tariana has already named her new friend Pinky 💕

Happy birthday, Tariana! ✨

A beautiful surprise at The Hearing House today! 💐

We were delighted to receive a stunning bouquet from the garden of Christine and Neil Duncan, who have been incredible champions of our mahi over the years. Their generosity and unwavering support have made such a difference for our community, and this thoughtful gesture truly brightened our day. 💛

Thank you, Christine and Neil, for sharing a little piece of your garden with us!

🎧✨ Earlier this week our team joined an online presentation on Listening Fatigue with researcher Natalia Rohatyn-Martin from the University of Alberta and MacEwan University in Canada.

Natalia shared insights from her research into listening fatigue experienced by Year 7–13 students, and explored the impact this has on learning and participation in the classroom. It was a fascinating session that gave us lots to reflect on and will help inform the way we think about supporting rangatahi who are Deaf or have hearing differences.

A big thank you to Natalia for sharing her knowledge and walking us through both her process and her findings! 🙏

👋✨ International Week of Deaf People 2025 ✨👋

This week we celebrated both International Week of Deaf People and a belated Speech Language Therapist Week 🎉

The theme for International Week of Deaf People is “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights” which highlights the importance of recognising and respecting sign languages as part of human rights, culture and identity.

At lunch, our team tried using noise-cancelling headphones and earplugs to get a glimpse of the challenges that can come when hearing is different from what we are used to. Core boards were on hand, and we were fortunate to have Natasha from Deaf Aotearoa guiding us with New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL). 🤟

The activity helped us reflect on what makes communication easier or harder and celebrate both the power of NZSL and the vital work of Speech Language Therapists in building inclusive communication. 💙

On Saturday, Auckland Deaf Society unveiled its first ever Whakairo Māori Carving (Pare) with a moving dawn blessing.

Our CEO Claire, alongside Natasha from Deaf Aotearoa, First Signs facilitator Maryanne, and one of our kiritaki (clients), Kathleen, were privileged to be part of this historic moment led by Māori Turi.

This milestone, during Māori Language Week, was a powerful celebration of Deaf Māori leadership, culture, and community. 🌿

✨ Raising the Deaf Flag at Parliament ✨

This morning, history was made at New Zealand Parliament as the Deaf Flag was raised for the very first time in Aotearoa. Our CEO, Claire Green, was honoured to be there to witness this powerful moment of pride, culture, and recognition for the Deaf community.

The Deaf Flag is more than a symbol – it represents identity, unity, and the celebration of language and culture. This historic milestone took place during International Week of Deaf People, highlighting the importance of visibility and recognition for Deaf communities everywhere.

💙 Celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori at The Hearing House 💙

During our Māori Language Week celebrations last week, one of the most inspiring moments was exploring Te Whare Tapa Whā, a model of wellbeing that balances spiritual, mental, physical, and family health.

Tipene Pickett shared the etymology (whakapapa) of words like wairua, showing how smaller words combine to create deeper meaning. Our Deaf community members were fascinated to see how vibration, connection, and meaning are woven into language, and NZSL brought these concepts to life.

Bringing together te ao Māori and Deaf culture was a powerful example of whakawhanaungatanga in action, reminding us of the many ways we communicate and connect.
