💟Around 1 in 9 women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives. Many risk factors like age, gender, breast density and past breast issues can’t be changed.

🎯But there’s one thing you can do, which is stay familiar with what’s normal for your breasts. Regularly touch and look for changes, and if something doesn’t feel right, make sure you book an appointment to talk to your doctor.

🌸Early detection makes a big difference. Knowing your normal helps you spot changes sooner and get the care you need. Learn more about breast awareness and how to check: https://www.breastcancerfoundation.org.nz/breast-awareness

💚On Mental Health Day, we’re reminded of something simple yet powerful: connection matters.

🙌Being part of something, whether it’s a conversation, a shared activity, or a moment of care, can lift our mood, give us purpose, and help us feel safe and valued. Research shows that social interaction plays a vital role in our wellbeing. Activities like volunteering, learning together, staying active, celebrating culture, and joining community events all contribute positively to mental health.

🎯As part of the 'Top Up Together' campaign, let’s nurture those connections and encourage our loved ones to be part of a strong support system. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional. Find out what you can take part in for Mental Health Awareness Week here: https://mhaw.nz/whats-on

💊Thinking of buying medicines online? Make sure you know the risks, stay informed before you buy with some key tips in mind:

✅ Buy only from verified New Zealand pharmacies. You can check the Medsafe Pharmacy Licence Register to be sure.
📄 Prescription medicines should always require a valid NZ prescription. If they don’t, that’s a red flag.
🚫 Ignore ads or social media posts claiming a medicine is “approved by Medsafe”, these are never genuine.
👩‍⚕️ If you’re unsure, talk to your pharmacist or GP before making a purchase.

⚠If you think you’ve received a fake or unsafe medicine, don’t use it. Report it to Medsafe’s compliance team. You can also let them know about scam ads or suspicious online pharmacies. And if you’ve taken something and feel unwell, check for side effects and learn how to report a reaction.

🩸This September, we’re talking about blood cancer because awareness can save lives.

🎯Blood cancer starts with the abnormal growth of blood cells, and there are many forms of blood cancer, but the most common are leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Symptoms can vary, but may include fatigue, bone pain, night sweats, unexplained bruising, or frequent infections.

🩺These signs don’t always mean cancer, but they do mean it’s time to check in with your doctor.

Let’s keep the conversation going.

☀️ Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus that is key for strong bones, healthy teeth, and steady muscles. It also supports your immune system and mental wellbeing.

🎯You might not notice low levels at first. But over time, they can lead to cramps, aches, and weaker bones. Severe deficiency can increase the risk of osteoporosis. If you’re unsure about your levels, talk to your GP. A quick test can help you stay ahead.

🧠 September is World Alzheimer’s Month - a time to come together, raise awareness, and speak openly about dementia and the impact it has on individuals, families, and communities.

💜While dementia affects each person differently, it typically progresses over time, making early recognition and support especially important. Some symptoms may be linked to treatable conditions, and early intervention can make a meaningful difference.

🎯There’s also growing evidence that certain lifestyle choices, such as keeping active, eating healthily and staying mentally active and social, can help reduce this risk. If you or someone close to you is experiencing changes in memory, behaviour, or thinking, it’s worth having a conversation with your GP.

To help you stay informed, here are 10 warning signs to be aware of: alzheimers.org.nz/about-dementia/10-warning-signs

🤒 A cough, sore throat, or runny nose is most often caused by a viral infection. Nonetheless, it’s wise to take a rapid antigen test to rule out COVID-19 and decide on the best next steps.

🏡 While you’re recovering at home, try remedies that bring comfort, like using a saline spray to clear congestion, salt water gargles, or taking ibuprofen as recommended by your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

👩‍⚕️ If your symptoms linger or you’re unsure about what’s going on, your GP is just a call away. For more tips on caring for yourself and stopping the spread of illness, visit https://healthify.nz/health-a-z/c/cough-runny-nose-sore-throat
