Ever wonder what’s holding you back from that promotion, hitting your business targets, or reaching that next level in life? The answer might be right under your pillow – your sleep quality! 💤

Poor sleep or disrupted sleep routines can seriously impact your focus, leaving you sluggish, distracted, and even dozing off at the most inconvenient moments (like during that big meeting!). Lack of quality sleep doesn’t just leave you tired; it keeps you from performing at your best, day in and day out.

How you breathe during the day has a huge impact on how you breathe at night. Making sure that your normal daily breathing pattern is normal and functional is important. Having good breathing habits is a powerful tool to help you achieve deep, restorative sleep – the kind that fuels productivity and puts you on the fast track toward reaching your goals! 🌟

Review from a previous client - Good breathing can affect our whole health:

"This course was quite groundbreaking for me. I didn't know that good breathing had such a huge and broad impact on our whole health and also wasn't aware how seldom I breathed through my nose, day and night, and the impact this has. It is early days yet but already I am seeing improvement in symptoms and I now have a toolkit of strategies. The course itself was really well presented by Dina with a great handbook, regular practices and a good system for measuring and recording progress. Invaluable. I am looking forward to how I will feel after several weeks of establishing new breathing routines!"

Thanks for the wonderful review Jan!

Breathe Easy this Spring! 🌸🌿 As the flowers bloom, so does hayfever season, but don’t let it get the best of you!

Pollen from trees, plants, and weeds can trigger your immune system, causing inflammation in your airways. This leads to symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, and difficulty breathing. When you breathe through your mouth, you take in larger volumes of air, along with more allergens, overwhelming your immune system.

Nasal breathing is your defense—it filters out pollen and soothes your airways, while mouth breathing allows allergens to reach your lungs more easily.

Stay ahead of hayfever by taking calm, gentle breaths through your nose. 🌬✨

Did you know that one such factor is chronic hyperventilation? It can keep your body stuck in “fight or flight” mode and lead to constant over-breathing which is linked to anxiety and panic attacks.

Let’s break the cycle and get to the root of the issue.

From Pessimist to Advocate (feedback from a lovely Australian client)

"At first, I was pessimistic towards the Breathe Buteyko Course. I thought that I had too many unrelated symptoms to fix. Before the course, I had a symptom score of 80 and when I completed the course, it was down to four! For over 10 years, I had tried a variety of practices, including steroids for eczema; antihistamines, immunotherapy and avoidance strategies for allergies; therapy for anxiety and depression, and so on and so forth... I thought that getting sick with the cold or the flu at least once a year was normal. I did not even realise that I had chronic hyperventilation nor that breathing through your mouth and chest was not ideal. Most of all, not until I was going through the course, did I know what it felt like to have a deep sleep, a head free from headaches and a belly free from bloating. I may still experience mild anxiety and the occasional panic attack but now I have the means and the support to manage.

Dina was, and continues to be, a very supportive coach. Her method felt personalised and well paced, such that I saw my progress and felt successful throughout the course.

I would recommend and have recommended, the Breathe Buteyko Course to anyone, especially after what it has done for me!" ~ Izarra R.

Did you know the position of your tongue can affect how you breathe?

For optimal nasal breathing, your tongue should rest flat against the roof of your mouth, right behind your top teeth—similar to the position when you pronounce the letter ‘N’. By keeping your tongue in this position and your mouth closed, you encourage better airflow and more efficient breathing through your nose. 🧘‍♀️✨

Why is this important? Nasal breathing promotes better oxygen exchange, supports lung health, and can even help reduce snoring and improve sleep quality!

✨ Breathing Tips for Better Speaking & Singing ✨

Did you know that taking big breaths through the mouth can cause your vocal cords to slam together, making it harder to speak or sing smoothly? Plus, it can dry out the vocal cords, making them less flexible and requiring more effort. And if you hear yourself taking loud inhales, it’s a sign that your false vocal cords are too tense!

Mastering healthy breathing habits is the key to effortless, high-quality vocal performance. Learn more on our website: https://thebreatheclinic.com/

Why do we struggle to sleep when we're stressed?

When we're stressed and exhausted, our sympathetic nervous system kicks into overdrive. Our body, still wired like our ancestors', perceives this stress as a threat, keeping us on high alert and preventing sleep so we're prepared to fight or flee if the 'danger' escalates. This heightened state also increases our urge to breathe, often leading to over-breathing or hyperventilation.

One simple way to tap into our parasympathetic nervous system – the part responsible for relaxation, rest, and digestion – is through controlled breathing. By doing this, we can interrupt the cycle of stress > stress response > over-breathing> insomnia > and back to stress again.

Breathing calmly and gently through your nose throughout the day helps reset your system. Establishing a pre-bedtime routine that includes calming activities like reading, praying, meditating, or listening to music can further support this by encouraging gentle breathing, which promotes deep, restful sleep. This, in turn, replenishes your energy for the next day, allowing you to not just face it but enjoy it!

Take a moment today to practice gentle breathing and set yourself up for a better night’s sleep. Your body and mind will thank you!

Hydration is more important than we often realise! 💧

Not only does it keep our bodies cool and our skin glowing, but it also plays a key role in supporting healthy breathing. When you're well-hydrated, your lungs can function more efficiently, helping you breathe easier and feel more energised throughout the day.

So, grab that water bottle and sip your way to better health ~ one breath at a time!

This was taken around 38 years ago when I could still deliver a killer axe kick! I can still do one but might not be as lethal as this! 🥋✨

I remember taking part in the National Taekwondo Competition. I can still recall that whenever it was the mid-fight break, my chest felt like it was bursting and I was gasping for air. You hardly had control of your breathing when the bell would ring and you had to stand up and fight again! I won all my fights though!

If I had known then what I know now about breathing, I would have had more efficient breathing, longer endurance, stronger muscles and faster muscle reflexes!

Did you know that chronic hyperventilation can contribute to persistent muscle pain and stiffness?

When one is chronically hyperventilating (dysfunctional breathing), we end up using our secondary breathing muscles to breathe - intercostals, upper back muscles and neck muscles. These muscles are not meant to be used long term and when we do, this will then result in muscle pain in the neck and back.

Another factor is that the body's response to overbreathing is vasoconstriction which will result in reduced blood flow to muscles, causing them to tighten and become painful. This is particularly common in the neck, jaw, back areas and even cause headaches.

Learning how to get your breathing back to automatic, healthy, functional daily breathing helps to avoid this and the resulting discomfort. 💫

Some nights, counting sheep just doesn't cut it. You've counted an entire flock and still can’t sleep. The issue might be your breathing!

When you hyperventilate or breathe just a bit faster than normal, it mimics stress. Your body sees this as danger, triggering an emergency response that keeps you awake.

By returning to natural, gentle breathing, you can calm your nervous system and promote deep, restful sleep. 🌙✨
