Our Acre Story

Our Acre Story We found our patch of NZ — rural views, town just down the road — and built our family home on it from the ground up.

We're in it now, but the story's far from finished. 🏡 Follow along for the real version. 🌿 OurAcreStory is a journey of our family's escape to the tranquility of acreage living. 🏞️ Join us as we build our dream home, embrace sustainable practices, and share the beauty of off-grid life. 🌿

We spent two years planning every single detail of this build. Floors, tiles, benchtops, fixtures — every decision was thought through.

Blinds? Total afterthought.

And then they went in. And the whole house changed.

Not just how it looked — how it felt. The light was right. The rooms felt finished. The temperature was finally under control. We pressed one button and every thermal blind in the house went up at the same time.

That’s the moment it stopped being a house we built and started being a home we live in.

We used Better Blinds — automated thermals throughout, manual sun filters in the rooms that needed them, and a double blind system in the bedrooms so we actually get to choose the kind of morning we wake up to.

If you’re building or renovating and blinds are still on your “we’ll figure that out later” list — move them up.

They said country living is aesthetic. They weren’t wrong. They also weren’t entirely right. 😅The mess is part of it. The beauty is part of it. Most days both exist in the same place. Drop a 🌿 if your place looks anything like this.

The single biggest decision we made before breaking ground wasn't the floor plan. It was who we chose to build it.
We were living on the same site the whole time — in two relocated cabins while the house went up around us. That meant we knew the land better than anyone. We knew which direction the kitchen needed to face so you could look out over the hills while washing dishes. We knew how the rooms needed to flow for the way our family actually lives.
What we needed was a builder who'd actually listen to all of that. Not hand us a catalogue and say "pick one."
Stroud Homes Auckland South did exactly that. Our ideas, our layout, our home — built the way we designed it. Communication was clear, timelines were honest, and they showed up every single time.
The build wasn't perfect. No build ever is. But the experience, and the result, was everything we hoped for.

If life ever gives you the choice between comfort and the dream that keeps pulling at you… take the risk.

Even if the journey feels long.

Some dreams are worth slowly building your whole life around.

Reason why we chose lighting. His work is deeply inspired by Aotearoa’s natural forms, coastlines, native materials, and the patterns found in nature. Even the way the light filters through the timber feels a bit like sunlight through trees or woven natural textures.

We love that these pieces don’t just light a room, they create atmosphere and shadow in a really organic way.

The acre outside still has a long way to go, but at night these lights make the house feel calm, warm, and grounded already.
