Music Therapy with Shari

Music Therapy with Shari Shari is a NZ Registered Music Therapist providing contract music therapy services in AucklandCentral

Based in an environment that is both accepting and encouraging, music provides a motivating, non-pressured medium through which to establish and develop a relationship of trust between client(s) and music therapist. Within those relationships people who experience life in different ways can experience music therapy as a safe space to create, explore, express, and process whatever life holds. From young children to older generations; one-on-one, with families and in groups; in schools, rest homes, health care facilities and private homes; working with people with special needs, mental health needs, intellectual and physical disabilities and within neuro-rehabilitation. It is about connecting music with what you need, finding your strengths and interests and building on these, using music to meet non-musical goals.

Today is the first day of ̄ori, . Developed by Language consultant, Keri Opal, the term for music therapy, ‘haumanu ā-puoro’. Hau means wind while manu is a bird - so therapy is interpreted as wind beneath the bird’s wings that helps it to fly and prosper. The Māori name of Music Therapy New Zealand is Te Roopu Puoro Whakaora O
Aotearoa (Healing Music Group, New Zealand).

How did I miss this?! Is it too late to set up a creative challenge now? https://www.createfordementia.org.nz/
Tell you what: if someone has a small-ish crochet challenge they think I can finish by June 30th I'll set up a fundraising page and get crocheting! If you like it when it's finished you get first chance to buy it, if not then I'll auction it off, proceeds go to Alzheimers New Zealand. Think fingerless-gloves, slippers, beanies, ear warmers, amigurami animals and characters (Star Wars ones my favourite!), hand puppets, dishcloths, facewipes, christmas tree decorations - ooh my latest is a cupcake pin cushion! Go on...I've been home sick, I could do with a challenge....

This June, let's get creative for a cause. Pick a fun, creative challenge, register your personal profile and raise funds to help us create a dementia-friendly New Zealand. Brought to you by Alzheimers New Zealand.

Anyone who knows me will tell you how significant it is that I'm wearing a pink shirt today (yes I had to buy one especially!), that's how strongly I feel about us speaking up, standing together and stopping bullying.

Tolerate it no longer. Tell yourself it's just banter, just a joke no longer. Think, oh they'll be ok I won't go make sure no longer. Click on the link no longer. Speak up for the survivor. Find a private moment to check in with the bully, mention what you've noticed and ask how you can support them, or ask someone else to have that kōrero, coz no doubt there's something going on for them that they need support with. Speak up, stand up, stop bullying.

Made me think of the too many times someone's said to me they're not musical or they can't sing or that someone else told them that and not to. Our heartbeat is rhythm, our voice is our in-built instrument, and we - who want to - should music like this elephant musics 🥳🐘🥁🎶💜🥰

My oh my music therapy week has been busy! So busy I forgot to get a photo of me in this! Celebration highlights: giving an in-service to a current workplace and afterwards discovering staff in the music room exploring ideas 🥰, a care home making the change to access this gloriously fun and motivating therapy service and when I started this week everyone was rearing to go 🥳, and just this morning a client retrieving this flower from the garden as a token of appreciation on behalf of everyone. Huzzah!
