Queen Street, Auckland only 20 years ago.

Left and right turning lanes meaning straight ahead traffic can proceed without delay. Footpath width is plenty for the pedestrian traffic and the availability of parking space to allow for visiting family and locally owned small businesses.

There are plenty of photos showing Queen Street in the '60s, '70s and '80s showing how freely vehicle and pedestrian traffic could move into and through the central city. in the early 2000s, Queen Street was still an open and inviting town centre for shoppers, diners and people at work.

Queen Street before Auckland Transport's relentless attack on private vehicle use. SIX lanes, two in each direction for straight ahead traffic, a dedicated left turning lane in each direction to allow straight ahead traffic to proceed unimpeded, courteous drivers keeping left unless overtaking, pavement space for pedestrians and plenty of small, locally owned businesses.
