We love a good success story! Kevin's been coming to us since 1999, and recently bought these dapper new Moscot progressives in August. He mentioned his previous progressive glasses weren't ideal for golfing 🏌️, and we suggested he try contact lenses with just his distance prescription.

He was willing to give them a go, and with the expert guidance of the Victoria St team was able to successfully insert and remove the contact lenses after one training session.

Having experienced the freedom of contact lenses, Kevin was excited to try multifocal lenses for everyday use. Now he's got more options, a new lease on life, he's feeling younger and looking forward to wearing stylish new sunglasses again this summer 👓🌞!

Under the new Traffic Light system, you will still be able to access our practice, see an optometrist, choose new glasses and continue to receive all of the services you have in the past. As a health service, we will see everyone and won’t ask about your vaccination status.
You will still need to scan in using the QR Code, observe social distancing and wear a mask unless you are exempt.
If you would prefer, we can arrange contactless collection or direct to home delivery.

Are your eyes feeling irritated, tired, sore and dry when you wear a mask?

There's no doubt that wearing a face mask is an important part of preventing the spreading of COVID-19, but as well as maskne and foggy glasses, mask associated dry eye is also on the rise.

A report published in the journal Ophthalmology and Therapy earlier in 2021 reported on the increase of cases of eye irritation and dry eye in those who regularly wear masks.

Mask wearing will continue for the foreseeable future, but you can things to improve mask associated dry eye.

ONE - make sure your mask fits well – look for a mask with a nose bridge that you can mould to your face, and adjustable ear loops can help ensure a tighter fit.

TWO - try folding a tissue and tucking it under the top of the mask to prevent air from escaping towards the eyes.

THREE - Taping your mask might help, but just don't tape it too high as to restrict your blinking.

FOUR - Eye lubricating drops, like Systane Complete or NovaTears, with an oily component can also help, as can warm compresses to naturally help the oily layer of your tears.

FIVE - if none of this helps, consider seeing us to check for underlying dry eye disease.

COVID-19 Level 3 Update

Matthews Victoria Street Optometrist is OPEN as an essential service. As healthcare providers, protecting our patients is at the heart of what we do, and our team is well trained to ensure we operate safely at every Alert Level.

We continue to have small work teams on-site from 9 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday. Our Optometrists can deal with any urgent eye health or vision concerns. The first step is via phone consultation, but we can see patients face-to-face in some circumstances. Even if it’s not urgent, we’re happy to provide advice about any concerns you have about your eyes or eyewear. Please call us on 09 379 9157.

We can also arrange contactless collections or delivery directly to your home for contact lenses, lens solutions, dry eye care products, anti-fog spray, ocular nutrition products, and eyewear.

As a local Kiwi business, we have been humbled by those who have continued to support us.

Remember to keep taking breaks from those screens – it’s good for eyes of all ages.

We can also provide video and phone consultations and advice via email for any other routine concerns you have and we can do contactless pick up.
