Trauma experienced across the childbirth continuum; we can help
• There is evidence to suggest that around 10% of women report a traumatic birth experience. In Aotearoa, that’s approx 6000 people every year
• Negative birth experiences affect the whole whānau and can lead to PTSD
• Conversely, pre-existing PTSD can negatively affect pregnancy and childbirth
• In Aotearoa, we lose more birthing women to su***de than to any medical/obstetric emergency.
Dee Dawson and Dr Christine Mellor are midwives, each with nearly 30 years of experience. During their careers, after witnessing increasing levels of emotional distress, and passionate about making a difference, they trained in a gentle form of therapy, known as Havening Techniques®. Dee and Christine then created Willow Psychosensory Therapy.
Havening is a remarkably effective psycho-sensory therapy based on neuroscience. Researched and created by Dr Ronald Ruden, Havening is a gentle combination of science and compassion. It works beautifully alongside talk therapy but is also a stand-alone therapeutic tool. It is gentle, safe and rapidly effective; often, only one or two sessions are required except in cases of complex trauma.
Because Dee and Christine are so familiar with the childbirth space, they specialise in supporting people who have had a traumatic birth experience (along with their support people if required) and can also help ease distress around:
• fertility challenges
• tocophobia (fear of childbirth)
• post-natal anxiety/feeding issues
• Previous stillbirth/loss of a baby
• Unexpected outcomes
Dee and Christine are also providing therapy for:
• workplace trauma
• phobias
• adverse medical events
• loss of a loved one
• sexual trauma
• childhood trauma/family harm
Dee and Christine have clinic spaces in Orewa, Milford, Kumeu and Titirangi and call also work online.
