🌟 HOW TO BRING MORE HOPE INTO YOUR LIFE 🌟

Hope is more than just a feeling. It is a powerful tool for your mental wellbeing.

Hopeful people are less likely to experience depression or anxiety, and a strong sense of hope can also build resilience, helping you cope when life gets tough.

The good news is that hope can grow. With small, positive actions, you can train your mind to focus on what is possible and give yourself things to look forward to.

👉 Swipe through for practical tips from the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand to help you build more hope day by day.

🚨 WE’RE EXPERIENCING TECHNICAL ISSUES 💻

We’re currently experiencing technical issues that are affecting some of our systems and processes.

Our IT providers are actively investigating the issue and working to restore services as quickly as possible. In the meantime, there may be some disruptions, delays, or temporary changes to how we do things.

We know this can be frustrating, and we truly appreciate your patience and kindness while we work through these challenges. Your support means a lot to our team.

We’ll share an update once everything is back to normal.

🔍 EARLIER ACCESS TO FREE BOWEL SCREENING 💙

People in Northland, Auckland, and the South Island can now take part in free bowel screening from age 58 (previously 60).

If you’re turning 58 or 59, or are already that age in these regions, you don’t need to do anything. A screening kit will be sent to you around your next birthday.

The lower starting age will be rolled out to the rest of Aotearoa from March next year.

Bowel screening is free, quick, and easy, and it helps detect cancer early when it is often easier to treat successfully.

📚 KEEP LEARNING | 💜

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week! And today’s theme is “Keep Learning.”

Learning new things is like exercise for the brain. It keeps our minds active, builds confidence, and creates a sense of achievement. When we learn together with friends or whānau, it can also strengthen relationships and make the experience more rewarding.

Here are a few simple ways to keep learning today:

✅ Join a class or group — try music, dance, or a book club
✅ Host a lunch and learn with your hoamahi
✅ Experiment with a new recipe or project at home
✅ Discover something new about your local area
✅ Do puzzles like crosswords, sudoku, or riddles

Every new skill or discovery adds to your sense of purpose and growth. How will you keep learning today?

🌿 TAKE NOTICE | 💜

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week! And today’s theme is “Take Notice.”

Taking notice is about being mindful and present in the moment. When we slow down and pay attention to our surroundings, it helps reduce stress, improve our hauora (wellbeing), and deepen our connections with others.

Here are a few simple ways to take notice today:

✅ Savour and share small moments that bring you joy
✅ Start a meeting with a karakia or short reflection
✅ Try a yoga class in person or online
✅ Write down or reflect on things you are grateful for
✅ Go for a walk with a friend and notice what you see, hear, and feel

Mindfulness gives us the chance to pause, breathe, and reconnect. What will you take notice of today?

🏃‍♀️ BE ACTIVE | 💜

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week! And today’s theme is “Be Active.”

Being active is not just about physical fitness. Moving your tinana (body) is a powerful way to lift your mood, reduce stress, and boost resilience. And when you get active with friends or whānau, it also strengthens social bonds and makes the experience more fun.

Here are a few simple ways to be active today:

✅ Try a TikTok dance with your whānau and share a laugh
✅ Organise a friendly game at the park with mates
✅ Have an impromptu kanikani (dance party) at home
✅ Turn daily tasks like gardening or vacuuming into movement breaks
✅ Take a walking hui instead of sitting inside

Being active releases endorphins, the "feel-good" hormones that boost your mood and support your wellbeing. How will you get moving today?

🤲 GIVE | 💜

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week! And today’s theme is “Give.”

Giving is about kindness, generosity, and sharing your time with others. Acts of kindness boost our happiness and sense of purpose, while also strengthening relationships and creating a ripple effect of positivity.

Here are a few simple ways to give today:

✅ Share a smile with a stranger
✅ Volunteer in your community or donate items you no longer use
✅ Bake something to share with your hoamahi (colleagues)
✅ Offer to help a friend with a task or mind their tamariki
✅ Let another car into traffic and notice the ripple of courtesy

Giving uplifts both you and those around you. How will you give today?

🤝 CONNECT | 💜

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week! And today’s theme is “Connect”.

Building strong relationships with friends, whānau, and colleagues is at the heart of our wellbeing. Feeling connected, supported, and valued gives us a sense of meaning and belonging.

Here are a few simple ways to connect today:

✅ Share kai with friends or whānau
✅ Send a quick message to someone you have not spoken to in a while
✅ Play a game, share a laugh, or strike up a kōrero with someone new

Social connection is the ngākau (heart) of wellbeing. So, how will you connect today?

💚 MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK | 6–12 OCTOBER 💚

Almost half of us will experience mental health challenges in our lifetime.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, you can make a difference by fundraising to provide people with the tools they need to navigate tough times. Your fundraising efforts go towards:

🛠️ PRACTICAL, EVIDENCE-BASED ADVICE

In 2024, the Mental Health Foundation distributed 1,261,924 free mental health resources across Aotearoa. 86% of users said these resources helped them support someone else, and many said they gave them hope for their own mental health and wellbeing.

💬 WELLBEING CAMPAIGN

The Mental Health Foundation’s campaigns change lives. In 2024, 73% of people who saw Pink Shirt Day said they would step in to stop bullying when they saw it.

⚖️ POLICY & ADVOCACY WORK

The Mental Health Foundation launched a campaign to highlight why the Mental Health Act needs to change and to help New Zealanders get involved in influencing this critical law for the better.

Let’s top up together and make mental health a priority for everyone.
