🌺 Honouring Luen Hoani 🌺

For over 36 years, Luen Hoani has stood as the Pou Tokomanawa of Te Kohanga Reo o Nga Tikanga Pono a pillar of strength, humility, and unwavering service to Te Ao Māori.

Born Luen Nanette Elizabeth Kay to Lesley and Elvina Kay, her journey into the kaupapa began through faith, whānau, and aroha. Guided by her belief in God and her commitment to the wellbeing of whānau and tangata, Luen embraced Te Reo Māori and Tikanga with open arms not as an observer, but as a devoted student, teacher, and leader.

From fundraising and building the kohanga whare with her own hands, to nurturing over 1500 tamariki into confident speakers of Te Reo. Luen has inspired generations including her own daughter Briar, now Kaiako Matua, and her mokopuna who continue the legacy.

A past kohanga reo student Te Arepa (age 11) shared:
“I’m good at speaking Māori and doing kapa haka because Koka Lu did lots with the kids at kohanga… even when my mum went there.”

As Chairperson of Te Puna Hauora, Luen continues to guide with integrity, calm, and purpose always putting whānau first.
Today, we honour her whakapapa, her faith, and her lifetime of service to our kaupapa.

He wahine toa, he wahine rangatira. He taonga nō tō tātou hapori.

Importance of Immunisation and the Flu Vaccine

Getting vaccinated is a safe and effective way to stay healthy and protect others. The flu vaccine, taken every year, is a simple step to reduce flu-related illnesses and keep communities strong.

Why Immunisation Is Important
1. Prevents Disease
o Protects against serious illnesses like measles, polio, hepatitis, and flu.
2. Protects Communities (Herd Immunity)
o Helps protect those who can't be vaccinated by stopping disease spread.
3. Reduces Healthcare Burden
o Fewer sick people mean less strain on hospitals and lower medical costs.
4. Prevents Disease Comebacks
o Keeps previously controlled diseases from returning.

Why the Flu Vaccine Is Important
1. Seasonal Protection
o Updated each year to match the latest flu strains.
2. Reduces Severity
o If you get the flu, symptoms are usually milder, and recovery is faster.
3. Protects At-Risk Groups
o Vital for babies, the elderly, pregnant women, and those with chronic health issues.
4. Prevents Complications
o Helps avoid serious flu-related problems like pneumonia.
5. Fewer Sick Days
o Means fewer missed days at work or school.

💥 Important Community Health Update – Whooping Cough 💥

Kia ora whānau,
A whooping cough epidemic has been declared across Aotearoa. It’s serious for pēpi (babies), tamariki, and hapū māmā (pregnant mums).
Let’s work together to keep our whānau safe and healthy!

1. Pregnant mums: Get your free Boostrix vaccine from 16 weeks of pregnancy.
2. Tamariki: Make sure your babies and kids are up to date with their vaccinations. Contact your GP for catch-ups if needed.
3. Whānau: Anyone around hapū māmā or pēpi should get vaccinated to help keep them safe.
4. Watch for symptoms: Severe coughing fits, sometimes with a “whoop” sound. See your GP if you’re worried.
5. Stop the spread: Wash hands, cover coughs, and stay home if you’re unwell.

💉 Talk to your doctor, nurse, or midwife for support. Together, we can protect our whānau!
