Over the weekend, our Ara Hauora mobile nurse team joined Te Hā Oranga and a range of local health and community providers to deliver a community health day at the Massey Community Hub.

Ara Hauora delivered 19 immunisations, including 16 flu vaccinations and two childhood immunisation catch-ups, and a Boostrix shot for one of the adults. The strong turnout showed just how valuable accessible, community-based health services are.

The event brought together a wide range of services, with providers including Well Women, Te Hā Oranga Tamariki Ora, Noho Āhuru (Housing), Heart Foundation, Breast Screening, Te Oranga Pūkahukahu, Bowel Screening, Oral Health, and the Electoral Commission all on site.

It was great to see whānau making the most of the day — having kōrero with providers, learning more about their health, and engaging with the services available. Free kai, including a sausage sizzle, and fun activities for tamariki helped keep the energy up throughout the day.

We’re proud to have been part of an event that made it easier for whānau to access care and information in one place. Ngā mihi nui to Te Ha Oranga for leading such a successful event, and to all the providers who came together to support the community.

Last Friday, we welcomed the Minister for ACC, Hon. Scott Simpson, to discuss how primary care and ACC are working together to support people’s recovery, return to work, and long‑term wellbeing.

We shared what this collaboration looks like in practice today, the critical role general practice plays across ACC client journeys, and how a more coordinated, future‑focused approach can strengthen health outcomes, system sustainability, and productivity.

“Primary care plays a vital role in supporting ACC and the wider health system – through programmes that help people return to work sooner and stay well.

“We’re proud to bring primary care insights and innovation into these system‑level conversations and to contribute to progress that benefits people, healthcare practices the health system as a whole,” says Bindi Norwell, Chief Executive at ProCare.

We value the opportunity to engage directly with government leaders and appreciate the Minister’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in healthcare.

A reminder that we’re running a community health day with Te Hā Oranga this Saturday 11 April from 10am-2pm at Massey Community Hub! There'll be free health checks, kids' activities, and a sausage sizzle, and our Ara Hauora nurses team will be providing flu immunisations.

Winter is approaching. Protect yourself and your family.

Flu vaccines are available starting today, 1 April, to safeguard you and your community this winter.

Flu, Covid, and whooping cough spread more easily in colder months. Immunisation effectively reduces severe illness, hospitalisation, and the spread of winter viruses.

✅ Flu vaccines available now
✅ Covid vaccines year-round; ensure you’re up-to-date before winter
✅ Free vaccines for those aged 65+, anyone who is pregnant, and people with certain health conditions.

👶 Protect pēpi this winter
Whooping cough (pertussis) can be serious for babies. Pregnant women should get immunised to pass some immunity to newborns until they receive their own immunisations at 6 weeks. (Ensure baby's immunisations are timely!)

You can book vaccines at many pharmacies, GPs, Hauora Māori, and Pacific health providers, as well as some midwives and community vaccinators.

📅 Book your vaccination online at 👉 bookmyvaccine.health.nz

In addition to vaccination, prevent winter illness by staying home if unwell, washing hands frequently, and practicing good hygiene.

We’ve been on a mission to make it easier for our community to access free health checks. Last weekend we delivered our second Pacific community health screening event in partnership with The Fono.

Our kainga joined us at the Tongan Methodist Church - Kenani Hall in Ōtāhuhu for a wide range of quick, useful health services all in one place, including free dental checks from The Fono, immunisations (including measles), Smokefree support, and health information and education. It was another rewarding and successful day, with many saying they gained a better understanding of their health and wellbeing.

A huge thank you to our event partners: The Fono/ Arthritis New Zealand / Well Women and Family Trust / Tōtara Hospice / Ministry of Social Development NZ / Breast Cancer Foundation NZ / Pacific Public Health - Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora / BreastScreen Aotearoa / Health Literacy NZ

We’d also like to acknowledge our partnership with Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora in delivering the Healthy Village Action Zone (HVAZ) programme, which supports fourteen Pacific Churches. It was wonderful to have nurses that support these churches come along to help provide health checks at the event!

We’d like to take a moment to spotlight a general practice who has delivered an innovative approach to improving cervical and HPV screening rates for their community – Henderson Medical Centre!

The practice recently ran a 12-hour, nurse-led cervical screening clinic. Running from 8am to 8pm, it directly addressed key reasons for patients not being able to get checked – work, childcare demands, costs, and the overall difficulty of attending during standard 9-5 hours – and included direct outreach to Māori and Pacific women to encourage attendance.

The clinic offered a flexible, comfortable and stigma free opportunity for women to put their health first. The Henderson Medical nurse team saw a great turnout, screening several women including one attendee who had never been screened before. The team also followed up on general health checks and answered questions. Attendees had only positive feedback, noting that the after-hours opportunity was the first time they’d been able to get their health checked without stress or time pressure.

Congratulations to Henderson Medical for their thoughtful and well-planned approach! The team is already looking into next steps on how they can continue to boost cervical screening rates.

With major capitation funding reforms due to take effect from 1 July 2026, practices are being asked to make critical decisions now — without access to the modelling, data requirements, or financial clarity needed to do so safely.

In New Zealand Doctor, ProCare CEO Bindi Norwell advocates for urgent action from Te Whatu Ora and the Ministry of Health, including:
• Clear data-sharing and security requirements
• Transparency on timelines and performance-based payments
• Mitigation options for practices facing funding reductions.

Primary care is already under significant pressure. Asking practices to opt in or out of contingent capitation without full information places unacceptable risk on sustainability, workforce planning and patient care.

ProCare stands ready to work constructively with government and sector partners — but clarity is needed now, not after the deadline has passed.

Our Ready Steady Quit team is dedicated to helping people across Tāmaki Makaurau make 2026 their year to quit smoking year. By providing free coaching, practical strategies, and advice on setting achievable goals, the team is here to help whānau ditch the ciggies for good.

They’ve already been hard at work this year getting out and about and connecting with the community – recently they attended Waitangi o Hoani Waititi on Waitangi Day, where they helped several whānau kick off their quit smoking journeys.

Our first Pacific community health screening event for 2026, delivered in partnership with The Fono, was a hit! It was a great opportunity to connect with the community and give aiga the tools and knowledge to take care of their health and wellbeing.

Hundreds of aiga joined us at one of our Healthy Village Active Zone (HVAZ) churches in Three Kings, where they accessed a range of health checks and advice. From learning more about their current health, to picking up new tips for the future, the day was full of positive energy, laughter, and connection. You can read more in our media release, linked in the comments below.

A huge thank you to our event partners:

February was Heart Health Month — a time to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and how early intervention can make all the difference. To mark the month, we supported ProCare Network practices with key information and resources and also held a fun Heart Health Month photo competition. We encouraged practices across our Network to send us a team photo wearing red to recognise the month. Several practices rose to the challenge, sending us some creative and spectacular photos!

Our two winning practices were Swanson Medical Centre and Orewa Medical Centre – congratulations to them both! Check out their pictures below.

Thank you to all of the practices who took part – it was wonderful to recognise Heart Health Month together.

For our wider community, a reminder: if you haven’t seen your GP in a while, book in, have a conversation, and ensure that you’re on top of your heart health!
