Presbyopia — when your arms get “too short”

If you’ve started holding your phone further away to read… this one’s for you.

Presbyopia is a natural, age-related change (usually from early–mid 40s) where the eye gradually loses its ability to focus up close. You might notice:
• Blurry near vision
• Needing more light to read
• Eye fatigue later in the day
• Constantly taking glasses on and off

✨ It’s not your eyes “failing”, it’s a normal part of how the lens changes over time.

Astigmatism is one of the most common causes of blurred or distorted vision, but it’s often misunderstood.

Instead of the eye being perfectly round (like a basketball), it’s more like a rugby ball, causing light to focus unevenly.

What this can feel like:
• Blurred or “shadowed” vision
• Difficulty focusing at all distances

Short-sighted vs Long-sighted — what’s the difference?

If you’ve ever been told you’re “short-sighted” or “long-sighted” and thought… what does that actually mean? You’re not alone.

Short Sighted = Myopia
You can see things up close clearly, but distance is blurry.
Think: squinting at street signs, struggling to see the board, or blurry driving vision.

Long Sighted = Hyperopia
Distance may be clearer, but near tasks can feel strained or blurry, especially over time.
Think: tired eyes when reading, headaches, or needing to hold things further away.

Did you know that dry eye disease is very common in people with glaucoma?

Studies suggest that up to 50–60% of glaucoma patients experience symptoms of dry eye.

There are a few reasons for this:
• Long-term use of eye drops — especially those with preservatives
• Multiple medications — increasing exposure to the ocular surface
• Age-related changes — both conditions become more common over time
• Underlying eyelid and gland dysfunction

Over time, this can lead to:
👁️ Irritation, burning, or gritty eyes
👁️ Fluctuating or blurred vision
👁️ Reduced comfort with drops (making treatment harder to maintain)

What can we do about it?
Managing dry eye is an important part of glaucoma care. At Illume Eye Care, we take a combined approach:
• Assessing the ocular surface and meibomian gland function
• Recommending preservative-free options where appropriate
• Supporting the tear film with targeted dry eye treatments
• Providing lid and lash care advice to reduce inflammation

In some cases, in-clinic treatments such as IPL or gland expression may also help improve comfort and drop tolerance.

Glaucoma treatment is long-term so keeping the eyes comfortable and healthy matters. If your eyes feel irritated while using glaucoma drops, it’s worth addressing, not just putting up with it.
