When the nail plate is affected by onychomycosis (nail fungus), unfortunately restrictive blood flow to the foot does not promote effective natural healing.

The 405nm laser beam damages the fungus itself and helps the body break down the fungus by producing hydrogen peroxide which is an antiseptic and antimicrobial. The 635nm beam stimulates the immune system and causes vasodilation (the dilation of blood vessels i.e. more blood flow) by producing nitric oxide. This allows improved blood flow at the feet and encourages the immune system to start healing and regeneration.

When the clear nail two-tier laser treatments are combined it aids the natural immune response, destroying the infection

The ‘Lunular’ Laser has been clinically proven to promote the growth of a clear, healthy nail. Nevertheless, reinfection is possible while not adhering to appropriate homecare. To reduce this risk, key strategies can be implemented to successfully keep your newly treated toe(s) clear and free of reinfection.
Proper toenail hygiene is essential in the fight against reinfection.
By following these simple steps, you can substantially reduce the risk of reinfection.
1.Wear breathable footwear when possible
2.Wear 100% cotton/bamboo socks and changes them often
3.Keep nails short and feet dry throughout the day
4.Recognise and treat tinea pedis (athlete's foot)
5.Apply anti-fungal nail solution on infected areas am/pm. Apply one drop under the nail plate and one drop at the base of the nail.
6.If you receive pedicures, be sure to review their sanitation procedures
7.Wash socks with hot water and a use an antifungal washing machine detergent like Canestan wash
8.Dispose of old nail varnishes that were used on infected nails.
9.Avoid getting shellac on your nails or any gel polish.
10.Disinfect nail cutters at home prior and post clipping nails with a disinfectant (I, e Dettol)

Diabetes & Foot Care

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas can no longer able to produce insulin, or when the body cannot make use of the insulin it produces. As a result, an increase in blood sugar level called hyperglycaemia. Over a long period, hyperglycaemia is associated with damage to body organs and tissue including nerves, blood vessels, eyes, kidney and feet.

Why do I need to see a Podiatrist if I have diabetes?
All people living with diabetes should have their feet checked by a podiatrist, diabetic nurse or GP at least once a year. Diabetic people sometimes develop “foot complication” due to complications of diabetes. In the foot, the common complications are damage to the nerves - damage to the blood vessels and reduced blood flow to any part of the body which can cause death to that part.

The common signs associated with damaged blood vessels supplying the feet are:
- Cold feet
- Cramping in leg when walking
- Cramping in leg when sleep
- Poor pulses
- Foot infection will take longer to heal which can lead to gangrene.

Your podiatrist will:
-Assess both circulation and sensation of the feet using podiatry tools.
- Examine the toenails and skin under both feet & toes for signs of infections.
-Assess any foot deformities causing corns/callous and footwear.

Our Podiatrists are specialists in treating both low & high risk diabetic patients.
